Past Perfect Tense
а) такими обозначениями времени, как by five o'clock к пяти часам. by Saturday к субботе, by the 15th of December к 5 декабря, by the end of the year к концу года, by that time к тому времени.
We had translated the article by five o'clock.
By the end of the year he had learnt to speak French.
Past Indefinite:
We carefully examined the samples which they had sent us.
We sent him a telegram yesterday as we had not received any letters from him for a long time.
Past Perfect,
We had not reached the station when it began to rain.
As I was going to the station, it began to rain. Fortunately I had taken an umbrella.
I received a letter from my brother yesterday. I had not heard from him for a long time.
1. He arrived at the Leningrad station, took a taxi and drove to the hotel. Then he went to the telegraph office and sent his wife a telegram.
2. He came home late in the evening. He had supper, read the newspaper and went to bed.
Past Perfect:
1. He arrived at the Leningrad station, took a taxi and drove to the hotel where he had reserved a room. He unpacked his things and wanted to go to the restaurant, but he remembered that he had promised his wife to wire to her on his arrival in Moscow. So he went to the telegraph office and sent her a telegram.
2. He came home late in the evening. He had visited the Museum of Fine Arts and had been to a concert. He had supper, read the newspaper and, feeling tired, went to bed.
Во втором примере цепь последовательных действий came, had supper, read, went to bed прерывается действиями, им предшествовавшими и выраженными в Past Perfect в отдельном предложении: Не had visited the Museum of Fine Arts and had been to a concert.
After the sun had set, we decided to return home.
After he turned off the light, he left the room.
When the secretary received the telegram, he immediately showed it to the manager.
When (= after) they had gone, he began to work.
I had finished my work before he returned.
Past Indefinite:
Не had hardly (scarcely) entered the house, when it started to rain.
No sooner had he arrived, than he fell ill.
