6. An Interview for a Job

Secretary: There’s Miss Eliot to see you. She is applying for a post here.

Bernard Stover: Yes. Well … No. All right. I’ll see her. But she said she can’t stay long. I’ll give her ten minutes. Just ten minutes.

Miss Eliot: Good morning, Mr. Stover. My name is Dorothy Eliot.

B.S.: Good morning, Miss Eliot. I have read your letter, but now I want to ask you a few personal questions. First, how old are you?

Dorothy: Twenty-four, sir.

B.S.: I see. So you left school about seven years ago. What were your best subjects at school?

D.: English and mathematics. And I liked French, too. Chemistry was my worst subject.

B.S.: That’s good. Mathematics is sometimes very useful in office work.

D.: And I have studied book-keeping.

B.S.: What have you been doing for the last seven years?

D.: I’ve had some secretarial and commercial training. When I left school I took a computer course, a course in book-keeping, office practice and some other subjects.

B.S.: How long was this course?

D: One year and a half.

B.S.: And what did you do then?

D.: I went to work in an insurance company in Liverpool.

B.S.: That’s very interesting. Do you like your present work?

D.: Yes, I do. I find it interesting. But I have personal reasons for living and working in Dover. Besides, I think work in your firm must be very interesting, too, and there are good opportunities for responsibility and promotion.

B.S.: Well, Miss Eliot, there is one more thing I want to ask you. How much do you earn in your employment?

D.: Sixty pounds a week for a five-day week.

B.S.: I see. Well, I shall write to check your references, and then get in touch with you again and tell you our decision some time this week.

D.: Thank you, sir. It’s very kind of you to see me and give me a few minutes of your valuable time. Good bye, sir.

B.S.: Good bye, Miss Eliot.
