A Century of Traditions and New Potentials

For already more than a century KSRI has been the leading ship research institution in Russia. It is involved in design and construction of both naval and commercial ships. It was with direct and extensive involvement of the KSRI intellectual potential that by early 1990s the country built up a first-rate navy and one of the world-largest commercial and fishing fleets.

The fundamental principle of all KSRI activities is the integrated approach enabling to find answers to various applied problems. It started with specific tasks of ship hullform testing and hydrodynamics, manoeuvrability and seakeeping performance optimization. Then KSRI got involved into other disciplines like marine power plant development, noise and vibration reduction, nuclear power plant safety and a number of other applications.

In 1999 KSRI made a new qualitative step forward in the ability to provide solutions for shipbuilding industries. That has become possible thanks to acquiring two new affiliates: the BALTSUDOPROECT Central Ship Design Bureau, which had supplied designs for building over 2600 naval and commercial ships amounting to 12,000,000 tonnes of displacement, and the LOT Research Institute, the principal national maritime industry institution for standardization and equipment cataloguing. Nowadays KSRI tackles various shipbuilding tasks from solving theoretical and applied problems up to delivering design drawings.
