The port of Novorossiysk was built on the coast of Novorossiysk bay. The port consists of two harbours – the Oil Harbour protected by one mole and the Dry Cargo Harbour protected by two moles. There are often gales (шторм) there caused by the north easterly or southerly winds.

The Oil Harbour is located in the North-Eastern part of the bay. There are eight cargo berths there for handling oil and oil import cargoes. It is also used for shipping cargo to Turkey and Algeria. Many million tons of cargo are handled by the port annually. They include cement, oil products, machinery, raw sugar, canned food, clothes, shoes, etc. At present the port is being reconstructed, the berths are being equipped with the latest facilities for cargo handling. At many of them new transit sheds have been built and cranes of the most modern type have been installed. Into these sheds export cargo is delivered for shipment, and imports are received for the delivery to road and rail transport. Special equipment is used for handling cargoes inside ships’ holds and railway cars. Containers and ro-ro ships are also handled here with much success.
