    1. Read and translate the text and then tell the group about Canadian Universities. Canadian Universities

Canadian Universities are educational institutions attended after at least 12 years of school for studies leading to a degree or research.

Universities offer a wide variety of educational programs. Some are large, providing a full spectrum of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Others give specialized education in fields such as business, engineering or agriculture. Architecture, education, medicine, law, and dentistry are fields where the first professional degree is considered an undergraduate program.

Undergraduate programs leading to a bachelor’s degree generally require three or four years of full-time study, depending on the province. All 90 universities run three or four year bachelor degree programs; most offer one or two year Master’s degree and a number also offer doctoral PhD programs. Some universities are called colleges, and a few are called institutes, school or polytechnics.

Universities usually admit students for a school year that starts in September and ends in May. Those universities on a semester or trimesters system will also admit students for a school year starting in January and/or May. Many also offer select courses during the summer session in June, July and August.

Students have the opportunity to combine academic study with work experience by spending one term on campus followed by another term of full-time work at a job related to the field of study.

There is distance education. Courses and complete degrees, taught by correspondence, teleconference, audiotapes, cable television broadcast and computer conferencing are all part of distance education programs at Canadian universities.
