Recommended procedures of translation oriented analysis
Mind that in the practical application of the model it may not always be necessary to go through the whole process of intratextual analysis step by step.
Establish the functional hierarchy for the particular text type, style and substyle taking into account the intended text function, the addressees (sender and receiver), the time and place of text reception, the medium (speech and writing), the motive (why the text was written and why it is being translated).
Define the subject matter, sketching the content of the text, paying attention to macrostructure and microstructure elements.
(Is the source text a thematically coherent single text or a text combination?
What is the subject matter of the text (or each component of the text combination)? Is there a hierarchy of compatible subjects?
Is the subject matter verbalized in the text (e.g. a topic sentence) or in the text environment (title, heading, sub-title, introduction. etc.)?
Is the subject matter bound to a particular cultural context?)
3. Study available references to balance presuppositions.
4. Derive the macrostructure of the text observing themain rules, mentioned above, and using the proposed techniques (deletition, generalization, construction).
5. Analyze the theme and its relation to the title.
6. Analyze the means of cohesion and coherence and theme and rheme structure.Study the non-verbal elements, lexicon and sentence structure of the text, paying special attention to the key words, lexical and syntactical devices.
(Are there any parts of speech (nouns, adjectives) or patterns of word formation (compounds, prefixed words), kinds of lexicon which occur more frequently in the text than would normally be the case?
Are the sentences long or short, coordinated or subordinated?
Which sentence types occur in the text?
Does the order of the sentence constituents correspond to the theme-rheme structure? Are there any focusing structures or deviations from normal word order?
Are there any lexical figures of speech, such as metaphor, metonymy, simile, epithet, personification, irony, pun, zeugma, etc. or syntactic figures of speech, such as parallelism, chiasm, rhetorical question, parenthesis, aposiopesis, ellipsis, etc.? What function do they perform in the text?
Are there any syntactic features which are determined by audience orientation, text type conventions or by the medium? Does the translation skopos require any adaptations?
8. Translate the text, analyzing ways and methods of its translation.
Recommended procedures of translation oriented analysis presentation
The presentation should manifest the results of the translation oriented analysis. Mind that it may not always be possible to reveal every item of the whole process for any text. To fulfil a translation-oriented analysis, one should characterize the following aspects of the source text:
1. The type (documentary or instrumental translation, mixed type), functional style and substyle of the ST.
2. The subject matter and macrostructure the text. Give a summary of the extract (or the story) under consideration (the gist, the content of the story in a nutshell).
State the problem raised (tackled) by the author. Formulate the main idea conveyed by the author (the main line of the thought, the author's message).
3. Comment on the techniques of title translation.
4. Analyze the compositional pattern (the exposition (introduction); the development of the plot (an account of events); the climax (the culminating point); the denouement (the outcome of the story)) of a complete story (chapter, episode), taking into account the means of cohesion and coherence and theme and rheme structure.
Follow the formula: Source text description - methods of translation + your argumentation. It implies that, firstly, you should dwell upon the ST part peculiarities (type of vocabulary, lexical and stylistic devices) employed by the author to achieve the desired effect, and then suggest your interpretation and comment on the applied techniques.
