Text 2 Ukraine’s International Cultural Ties

One of the important tasks of Ukrainian cultural policy is the support of the exchange of cultural values between other countries and peoples. We can say that the Ukrainian international cultural contacts are broader and more varied today than ever before. International cultural exchange is intensifying and becoming more fruitful.

Now Ukraine maintains cultural contacts in various forms with many countries of all continents. The best works of composers and dramatists of Ukraine and other countries are exchanged. Representatives of amateur art are taking an active part in the exchange of cultural values between countries.

More and more gifted young people from foreign countries study at Ukrainian educational establishments of culture and art.

Many students from Ukraine are sent to other countries for studying abroad and improving their knowledge in future profession.

The two-way exchange takes place at a high artistic level. Foreign stage directors, actors and musicians stage shows in Ukraine. We want to show abroad the achievements of our culture at its best.

Exchange of art exhibitions is especially indicative in determining the level of current international co-operation. These exhibitions give foreign audiences an idea of our national art and its historical development. Ukrainian art lovers can see masterpieces of European painting from the museums of many countries.

Representatives of Ukrainian culture and art take an active part in international congresses, conferences, and symposiums. Many meetings of this kind are conducted in our country as well.

There is also a large turnover in books, magazines and newspapers with foreign countries. Many foreign books and periodicals are received through direct exchange with foreign libraries.

The road to our country is always opened to everybody who brings real art and real cultural values.

International Relations of Libraries

Ukraine maintains cultural links with many countries of the world. In our epoch cultural and scientific relations among nations are of great significance as they promote mutual understanding and friendship.

The traditions of our country in preserving cultural treasures of the world and in popularization of the best masterpieces of the human mind are widely known.

Libraries play a significant role in providing Ukrainian people with foreign literature and thus promote the development of international relations of our country/

Nearly all the libraries of the country have foreign literature in their collections. Ukrainian libraries exchange publications with different organizations and libraries of many countries in all continents of the world.

The international loan system is also highly developed and books that are not available in Ukraine are received through these channels.

The relations of Ukrainian libraries with those of Europe,, America and Asia are constantly developing. The cultural agreements of our country frequently include the exchange of library delegations.

Our libraries maintain cultural cooperation with such international organizations as: International Federation for Documentation (FID); International Organization for Standardization (ISD); International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (IAML); International Association of Agricultural Libraries (IAALD).
