grey, yellow and red. I can find … place on … map where … Father is now: it is … Far East. It is far from Petersburg. When it is still dark in Petersburg and only … moon and stars are shining it is light there because … sun is already rising in … East.

17. Translate into English.

На стенах полки с книгами, так как я люблю читать (to be fond of reading).

Text 1: Meals.

Breakfast in a British hotel is a large meal. It usually begins with a choice of fruit juice, porridge or cereal. Then comes the main course with a choice of bacon and egg, bacon and sausage, poached egg, boiled egg, scrambled egg, or fish. Finally there is toast and marmalade. You may choose tea or coffee to drink, though in cheaper hotels you may be offered only tea. In more expensive hotels there is more choice at each stage.

Lunch in a simple hotel begins with soup, though in a more expensive one you usually have a choice of soup, fruit juice, or hors d`oeuvres. For the main course there are three main choices: cold meat and salad, fish, or roast meat and two vegetables. Then there is a choice of sweets, such as hot apple tart, a hot milk pudding, cold fruit salad, or ice-cream. If you wish to finish the meal with coffee, you must pay for it as an extra.

At about five o’clock there’s a very light meal called tea. This consists of a cup of tea and a cake.

In England "everything stops for tea". In the train you are sure of being able to get it, in the car you carry it in a flack. Even at theatre and cinema matinees, during the interval, usherettes move about carrying trays laden with cups and teapots.

Finally in the city offices, as if by ritual, twice a day, about eleven o’clock and at four - steaming cups of tea.

Dinner in a hotel is very similar to lunch, except that there is usually more choice and it is nearly always dearer. In an expensive hotel there is also often an extra fish course before the main course.

Text 2: “The Browns Give a Dinner Party”

This Evening the Browns has invited some friends to dinner. It is just a small dinner-party for four of their friends: Mr. and Mrs. Carter and Mr. and Mrs. Macdonald.

The guests arrive at about half past seven and are shown into the sitting-room where Mr. Brown pours drinks for them.

Sherry is the most popular wine in England; men usually prefer dry sherry, but women prefer sweet. At eight o’clock Mrs. Brown says dinner is ready, and they move into the dining-room.

Mary Brown does all the cooking in her house. She is always a little worried in case something goes wrong, but this evening everything goes well and the guests make many kind remarks about her cooking.

There are four courses: soup, fish, meat and a sweet which is pudding today. Cheese and biscuits and coffee will be served after the sweet.

The conversation at table is lively and interesting. Mrs. Brown will not let the men talk about trade and politics all the time; when she thinks anyone is getting tired, she changes the subject.

She is very good at getting people to talk in an interesting way, and there is always plenty of laughter at her dinner-table. Mr. Brown often wonders how his wife can manage to make sure that all her guests enjoy themselves, and at the same time the dinner is well served.

But then, he has known for a long time that his wife is a very clever woman!

When dinner is over they go to the sitting-room. For a while the ladies sit and talk while the men stand about smoking their cigars and talking business. Presently Mr. Brown brings out some of his new records he thinks his guests will like to hear. At about eleven o’clock the Macdonalds decide they must go as they have to get back to London. The Carters offer to run them to the station in their car. So all the guests leave together. Mr. and Mrs. Brown see them off at the garden gate. The guests thank their hosts for a pleasant evening and drive off.
