TEXT I. RUSSIA

Russia is one of the largest countries in the world. The vast territory of Russia lies in the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia.

Russia is washed by twelve seas and three oceans. The oceans are: the Arctic, the Atlantic and the Pacific. The Russian seas are: the White Sea, the Barents Sea, the Okhotsk Sea, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea and others. Russia borders on many countries, such as Mongolia and China in the south-east, Finland and Norway in the north-west.

The land of Russia varies much from forests to deserts, from high mountains to deep valleys. Russia crosses 11 time zones from the East to the West and several climatic zones from tundra to subtropics.

The main mountain chains are the Urals, the Caucasus and the Altai. There are a lot of great rivers and deep lakes on its territory. The longest rivers are the Volga in Europe, and the Ob, the Yenisei and the Lena in Asia. The largest lakes are Ladoga and Baikal. Baikal is the deepest lake in the world and its water is the purest on earth. The Russian Federation is rich in natural and mineral resources. It has deposits of oil, gas, coal, iron, gold and many others. It has the world's largest forest reserves and its lakes contain one-quarter of the world's freshwater.

The current population of Russia is 141 million people. The European part of the country is much peopled, and the most population lives in cities and tows. Russia is a federal presidential republic, comprising 83 federal subjects. According to the Constitution of Russia, the President is the head of state and the Prime Minister is the head of government.

The capital of Russia is Moscow, with the population of about 10 million. Russia is one of the leading powers in the world. It is one of the five nuclear weapons states and it possesses the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. State symbols of Russia are the doubleheaded eagle and a tricolor: white-blue-red.

Literature

Russian literature is one of the most developed in the world. Russia's literary history dates back to the 10th century. The Golden Age of Russian Poetry began with Alexander Pushkin, the founder of modern Russian literature (the "Russian Shakespeare"). The 19th century is marked with the poetry of Lermontov and Nekrasov, dramas of Aleksandr Ostrovsky and Anton Chekhov, and the prose of Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Mikhail SaltykovShchedrin and Nikolai Leskov. The Silver Age of Russian Poetry (beginning of the 20th century) saw such writers as Bryusov, Bely, Blok, Gumilev, Akhmatova, Tsvetaeva, Bunin and Gorky. The leading authors of the Soviet era included Zamiatin, Mayakovsky, Ilf and Petrov, Bulgakov, Pasternak, Sholokhov.

Arts

Classical painting: The Russian Academy of Arts was created in 1757, aimed to give Russian artists an international status. Notable portrait painters from the Academy include Fyodor Rokotov, Dmitry Levitzky, and Vladimir Borovikovsky. Realist painting: Realism came in

the 19th century. The Peredvizhniki group of artists broke with Russian Academy and initiated a school of art liberated from Academic restrictions. Leading realists were Shishkin, Kuindzhi, Kramskoi, Levitan, Surikov, Vasnetsov and Repin. Russian avant-garde: The Russian avant-garde is an term used to define the wave of modernist art that flourished in Russia from 1890 to 1930. The term covers many art movements: neo-primitivism, constructivism, and futurism. Notable artists from this era include Kazimir Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky, Alexander Rodchenko and Marc Chagall.

Ballet

The original purpose of the ballet in Russia was to entertain the royal court. The first ballet company was the Imperial School of Ballet in St. Petersburg in the 1740s. During the early 20th century, Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova rose to fame. Soviet ballet preserved the perfected 19th century traditions, and the Soviet Union's choreography schools produced one star after another: Maya Plisetskaya, Rudolf Nureyev, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. The Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and the Mariinsky in St. Petersburg remain famous all over the world.

Science and Innovation

In the 19th and 20th centuries Russia produced a large number of great scientists and inventors. Lobachevsky developed the nonEuclidean geometry, Mendeleev invented the Periodic table, Kotelnikov invented the parachute, Yablochkov and Lodygin were inventors of early electric lamps. Alexander Popov was among the inventors of radio. The greatest Russian successes are in the field of space technology. Tsiolkovsky was the father of theoretical astronautics. In 1961 on 12 April the first human trip into space was successfully made by Yury Gagarin. Other Soviet space exploration records include the first spacewalk performed by Alexey Leonov, the first space exploration rover Lunokhod-1 and the first space station Salyut 1. Nowadays Russia is the only provider of transport for space tourism services.

Cuisine

Russian cuisine uses fish, poultry, mushrooms, berries, and honey. Crops of rye, wheat, and millet provide the ingredients for breads, pancakes, kvass, beer, and vodka. Black bread is very popular in Russia. Soups and stews include shchi, borsch, ukha, solyanka and okroshka. Pirozhki, blini and syrniki are native types of pancakes. Cutlets, pelmeni and shashlyk are popular meat dishes. Popular salads include Russian Salad, vinaigrette and Dressed Herring.

Holidays

There are eight public holidays in Russia. The New Year, Rozhdestvo, Defender of the Fatherland Day (February 23), International Women's Day (March 8), Spring and Labor Day (May 1); Victory Day (May 9); Russia Day (June 12) and Unity Day (November 4). Fireworks and concerts are common features of all Russian public holidays. Other popular holidays, which are not public, are Old New Year, Maslenitsa, Ivan Kupala Day and Peter and Fevronia Day.

National symbols

Matryoshka doll is a recognizable symbol of Russia, while the towers of Moscow Kremlin and Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow are main Russia's architectural symbols. Cheburashka is a mascot of Russian national Olympic team. Mary, Saint Nicholas, Saint Alexander Nevsky, Saint Sergius of Radonezh are Russia's patron saints. Camomile is the national flower, birch is a national tree. Russian bear is an animal symbol and national personification of Russia. Typical Russian souvenirs include Balalaika, Ushanka, Garmoshka, Vodka, Caviar, Valenki, Kalash, and Samovar.
