TEXT I. ACADEMY OF CULTURE AND ARTS

Barnaul is an administrative center of Altai region. It is a big industrial, cultural and educational center of Siberia. There are 9 state institutions of higher education in Barnaul but only one gives artistic and cultural education – the Altai Academy of Culture and Arts. It was founded in 1975 and was called the Institute of Culture at that time.

At present moment 5 faculties are opened to applicants in the Academy. They are the Musical Faculty, the Faculty of Information Resources and Design, the Faculty of Artistic Creation, the Choreographic Faculty and the Institute of Complementary Education. About 3000 students are enrolled in the Academy study in the day and extramural departments. The Academic study trains students in about 30 professions. The Academy possesses 3 buildings for study, library, museum, publishing house, 2 student‘s hostels, scientific laboratories and a gym-hall.

The course of studies at the day department is 4 years and at the extra-mural department is 5 years. After entrance exams students are enrolled on the competitive basis. They are offered 3 scientific branches and 11 specialties. Students studies in two shifts. Usually they have three or four classes a day. The academic year is divided into two terms. After each term students take exams. After each session students

have vacations – two weeks in winter and two months in summer. During first two years they study general subjects (philosophy, aesthetics, psychology, literature, a foreign language). In the 3d year students begin to study special subjects. In the final year students write diploma papers and take state exams. Upon a completion of four-year programs students are awarded a Bachelor‘s degree. Students who wish to pursue a career in academy and research can get a Master‘s degree. The length of study is at least two years.

Students of the Academy are always creative, that‘s why amateur activity has been flourishing and there are many student organizations. Now the Academy really takes the leading place among other Institutions of Culture. It provides a very good training of qualified specialists in different fields of culture.

TEXT II. THE FACULTY OF INFORMATION RECOURSES

AND DESIGN

The Faculty of Information Recourses and Design began its work in 1975, when first students entered the Institute of Culture. From the very beginning faculty became a center of academic and professional training of highly qualified specialists.

The head of the faculty is the associate professor Balashova E.V. The Faculty of Information Resources and Design consists of five departments. They are the department of Management of Information Resources and Social Work, the department of Bibliographies, the department of Computer Science, the department of Museology and Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage, the department of Design and Architecture. The general scientific department of the faculty is the department of Humanities (literature, social psychology, pedagogy and foreign languages).

Students of the faculty are the winners of governmental and municipal grants. The special pride of the faculty are its graduates who work in the leading universities and libraries.

Scientific, pedagogical and creative level of the teaching staff, efficient organization of the educational process – all these factors contribute to the quality of education and effectiveness of students' professional work.
