TEXT I. THE RUSSIAN STATE LIBRARY

The Russian State Library (former Lenin State Library) is the national library of Russia, located in Moscow. It is the largest in the country and the fourth largest in the world for its collection of books.

The library was founded in 1862 as a part of Rumyantsev Museum. The Rumyantsev Museum housed the Art collection of count Nikolai Rumyantsev, which he had given to the Russian people. The library was Moscow's first free public library. It had books and manuscripts, extensive numismatic and an ethnographic collections, paintings and prints from the Hermitage.

Today the Library comprises a unique collection of Russian and foreign documents in 247 languages of the world. The library has over 275 km of shelves with more than 43 million items, including over 17 million books and serials, 13 million journals, 350 thousand sound records, 150,000 maps, rarities, dissertations and others.

Both Russian and foreign residents above the age of 18 can use any of 34 reading rooms. Every day about 200 new readers come to register with the State Library. The RSL also has virtual reading halls which are available and are attended by about 8000 visitors daily. There is also free public access to RSL‘s on-line digital catalogue, which has been launched and is extending.

For over 140 years the Library has been providing its resources to a variety of readers: world-reputed scholars as well as students, practical specialists and fundamental theorists, residents and visitors from abroad. The Russian State Library funds are available through the elaborate system of its catalogues and card-indexes.

To register with the library a person should get an individual library card with a personal photo. The photo is charged about 100 rbl. Visitors from abroad should provide an ID with visa or registration. One-off visitors can access library catalogues of the following departments: Web Resources Department; Department of Public Documents, e-library of RSL and reference rooms.

To promote public interest for reading, RSL hosts regular educational and cultural events, gathering scholars, writers, artists and actors and their audiences at book presentations, readers' conferences and concerts.
