III. Read the following dialogues. See how you can ask for information and how to reply. Reproduce the dialogues:

Dialogue A

Man: Excuse me, do you know which bus to take for London Road, please?

Woman: Sorry, I am afraid I have no idea.

Man: Oh, I see. (He goes up to another person) Excuse me, you don‘t know which bus goes to London Road, do you?

Woman 2: Yes… Number 5, I believe.

Man: Thanks a lot. And how much is a ticket?

Woman 2: Sorry, I don‘t know. You‘d better ask the ticket inspector over there.

Dialogue B

Man: Excuse me, sorry to trouble you, but I wonder if you could tell me the way to Whistling street, please?

Woman: Well, I‘m sorry, I am afraid I‘ve never heard of it. Are you sure you‘ve got the right name?

Man: I believe so, but I am not certain. It‘s simply that I have a meeting in a restaurant there at 2 o‘clock.

Woman: Do you remember the name of the restaurant?

Man: Yes, of course, ―La Paloma‖.

Woman: Oh, ―La Paloma‖! Now I know. But it‘s not Whistling

Street you want but Wishing Street.

Man: Wishing Street? Oh, I see. But is it around here somewhere? Woman: Oh, yes, quite correct. It is the next turning on the left.

Man: Oh, I was beginning to think I‘d never find it. Well you‘ve been so helpful. Thank you very much.

Text II. About London in brief

Ethnic groups

According to the Office for National Statistics, 70 % of the 7.5 million inhabitants of London were White. Some 13 % are of South Asian descent (India, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis). 11 % of London's population are Black (Black African, Black Caribbean and "Other Black)". 3.5 % of Londoners are of mixed race; 1.5 % are Chinese; and 1.9 % belong to another ethnic group. There are more than 300 languages spoken in London. Across London, Black and Asian children outnumber White British children by about six to four.

Religion

The majority of Londoners – 58.2 % – identify themselves as Christians. This is followed by those of no religion (15.8 %), Muslims (8.5%), Hindus (4.1 %), Jews (2.1 %), Sikhs (1.5 %), Buddhists (0.8 %) and other (0.2 %).

London has traditionally been dominated by Christianity, and has a large number of churches, particularly in the City of London. The wellknown St Paul's Cathedral in the City is an Anglican administrative centre. Important national and royal ceremonies are shared between St Paul's and Westminster Abbey. London is also home to Muslim Hindu, Sikh, and Jewish communities.

Transport

London has been called as the city with the best public transport. The London Underground is the oldest, and one of the longest and most expansive metro systems in the world, dating from 1863.

London's bus network is one of the largest in the world, running 24 hours a day, with 8,000 buses and over 6 million passenger journeys made every weekday. The distinctive red double-decker buses are internationally recognized, and are a trademark of London transport along with black cabs and the Tube.

Cycling is also an increasingly popular way to get around London. London is a major international air transport centre with the largest city airspace in the world. London Heathrow Airport is the busiest airport in

103

the world for international traffic. Although the majority of journeys involving central London are made by public transport, travel in outer London is car-dominated. London is notorious for its traffic jams. The average speed of a car in the rush hour is 10.6 miles per hour.

Sport

London has hosted the Summer Olympics twice, in 1908 and 1948. In July 2005 London was chosen to host the Games in 2012, which makes the city first in the world to host the Summer Olympics three times. London's most popular sport is football. London has thirteen League football clubs, including five in the Premier League: Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. London also has four rugby union teams in the Guinness Premiership. Also there are two professional rugby league clubs in London.

Cricket in London is served by two Test cricket grounds. One of London's best-known annual sports competitions is the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, held at the All England Club in the southwestern suburb of Wimbledon. Other key events are the annual massparticipation London Marathon which sees 35,000 runners (42.2 km course around the city) and the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race on the River Thames between Putney and Mortlake.

Economy

London is a major centre for international business and is one of three "command centres" for the world economy (with New York City and Tokyo). London has the 6th largest city economy in the world after Tokyo, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Paris.

London's success as a business centre can be attributed to such factors as English being the dominant language of business, close relationship with the U.S. and countries in Asia. Government policies such as low taxes, a business friendly environment, good transport infrastructure have all contributed to London's economy. London has over 480 overseas banks, more than any other city in the world. London is home to banks, brokers, accounting firms.

Tourism is one of London's prime industries. London is at first place out of 150 of the world's most popular cities, attracting 15.6 mil-

104

lion international tourists in 2006. So London attracts 27 million visitors every year. London ranks as one of the most expensive cities in the world, alongside Tokyo and Moscow.

Education

London is home to many universities, colleges and schools and has a student population of about 378,000 and is a centre of research and development. With 125,000 students, the University of London is the largest university in the United Kingdom and in Europe. It comprises 20 colleges as well as several smaller institutes. There are colleges such as Royal Holloway, Birkbeck, King's, Goldsmiths, Queen Mary and many specialized institutions such as the London School of Economics, the Royal Academy of Music, the Institute of Art and the Institute of Education.

Imperial College London and University College London have been ranked among the top ten universities. A number of colleges are dedicated to the fine arts, including the Royal College of Music, Royal College of Art, and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In addition there are three international universities: Schiller International University, Richmond University and Regent's College.

Fashion and Cuisine

Europe's busiest shopping area is Oxford Street in the West End, a shopping street nearly 1 mile (1.6 km) long—which makes it the longest shopping street in the world—and home to many shops and department stores including Selfridges. London is home to designers Vivienne Westwood, Galliano, Stella McCartney, Manolo Blahnik, and Jimmy Choo among others; London's art and fashion schools make it an international centre of fashion alongside Paris, Milan and New York.

The English food has historically been characterized by its simplicity. Traditional examples of English food include the Sunday roast served with boiled vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips, the English breakfast—bacon, grilled tomatoes, bread, beans, mushrooms, sausages and eggs. Sweet English dishes include apple pie, Eccles cakes, custard and sticky toffee pudding. Drinks include traditional tea, alcoholic drinks include wines and English beers such as bitter, mild,

105

and brown ale. London also offers a great variety of cuisine as a result of its ethnically diverse population. Gastronomic centres include the Bangladeshi restaurants and the Chinese food restaurants.
