Bookcrossing is a well-known world practice of leaving books in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then leave the book again. It is a bright example of reading promotion.

Other interesting promotional campaign is the ―Biblionight‖. The aim of this annual event is to make reading a way of life in Russia. At this night all libraries, museums, galleries and bookshops open their doors for visitors. Libraries conduct master-classes, literary quests and meetings with writers.

To create book clubs all over Russia is another initiative. These clubs will gather readers and organize meetings or videoconferences with well-known writers and publishers. Grammar:

Sequence of Tenses (Согласование времен)

Согласование времен – это зависимость времени глагола в придаточном предложении от времени глагола в главном.

Если глагол-сказуемое главного предложения стоит в одном из настоящих, то глагол-сказуемое в придаточном предложении может стоять в любом времени в зависимости от смысла.

Настоящее время в главном предложении:

Ex: He says that I remind him of his ex. – Он говорит, что я на-

поминаю ему его "бывшую".

Основное правило согласования времен

Если глагол-сказуемое главного предложения стоит в одном из прошедших времен, то глагол в придаточном предложении употребляется только в одной из форм прошедшего или будущего в прошедшем времени. Времена Future in the Past образуются с помощью вспомогательного глагола “would”.

Прошедшее:

Ex: I thought she had been home yesterday. – Я думал, что вче-

ра она была дома.

Будущее в прошедшем:

Ex: George said he would come tomorrow. – Джордж сказал, что придет завтра.

Если действие в придаточном предложении происходит одновременно с действием в главном предложении, то нужно исполь-

зовать Past Simple или Past Continuous:

Ex: They told us, ―We are going to the library.‖ Они сказали нам: «Мы идем в библиотеку».

They told us they were going to the library. Они сказали нам, что идут в библиотеку.

175

Если действие в придаточном предложении предшествует действию в главном предложении, то глагол в придаточном ис-

пользуется в Past Perfect или Past Perfect Continuous:

Ex: We were told, ―It was raining a lot.‖ Нам сказали: «Было много дождей».

We were told that it had been raining a lot. Нам сказали, что было много дождей.

Если действие в придаточном предложении следует после действия в главном, то нужно использовать одно из времен

Future-in the-Past:

Ex: She said: ―I will try to get the highest mark on the exam.‖ Она сказала: «Я постараюсь заработать на экзамене лучшую оценку».

She said she would try to get the highest mark on the exam. Она сказала, что постарается заработать на экзамене лучшую оценку.

Указательные местоимения и наречия места и времени

также претерпевают изменения в косвенной речи:

this – that = этот – тот these – those = эти – те here – there = здесь – там now – then = сейчас – тогда

yesterday – the day before = вчера – за день до того today – that day = сегодня – в (э)тот день

tomorrow – the next (following) day = завтра – на следующий день

ago – before = тому назад – до этого (до того)

last week / year – the previous week /year = прошлый год (не-

деля) – предыдущий год (неделя)

next week / year – the following week / year – здесь перевод на русский не меняется = следующий год (неделя)

Ex: One year ago Mike visited his friends in Russia. – Год назад Майк гостил у своих друзей в России.

Mike said that a year before he had visited his friends in Russia. –

Майк сказал, что годом раньше он гостил у своих друзей в России.
