1. реализацию социокультурного направления в обучении;
2. преобразование содержания учебного курса, выявляющее его культурную и личную ценность для учащегося;
3. приобщение к вечным проблемам бытия, усиливающее мировоззренческую значимость курса;
4. обращение к учебной информации, необходимой для решения собственно учебных задач и приобщение учащихся к гуманистическим ценностям.
Methodology
153
В состав процессуально – технологических моделей включим следующие
процедуры:
предварительный ценностный анализ личности учащихся, позволяющий со
знанием дела планировать деятельность преподавателя, направленную на формирование определенных ценностей;
создание на уроках психологических условий для эмоционального переживания
формируемых у учащихся ценностей;

A newspaper article is a powerful vehicle for developing intercultural awareness with language students as it presents an authentic text, borrowed from a communicative practice of
native speakers: ―authentic materials are materials that we can use in the classroom and that have not been changed in any way for ESL students‖ [2, p.2].
And as such, a newspaper text possesses lexical, grammatical, composition and format authenticity, complemented with informative, cultural, situational, conceptual and intercultural relevant properties.
Lexical authenticity is presented by a lexical and phraseological corpus that functions in the text with a specific frequency.
Grammatical and structural authenticity of the article is no less important and it consists in a formal as well as content cohesion between the parts that is provided by a text composition and its logical and grammatical links.
An informative authenticity is critical to the main functions of the newspaper article viewed as a continually renewed or refreshed text, alongside with interviews, reports,
advertisements, readers‘ letters and commentaries. The informative function goes hand in hand with the persuasive function, since the author‘s main goal is producing speech influence
on a recipient. As a source of information the newspaper supplies the readers with the latest data that is culturally oriented, situationally relevant and conceptually loaded. Actually, a blend of these properties creates a powerful tool for conveying the author‘s idea and affecting a reader.
An intercultural criterion of authenticity implies mainly socio-cultural authenticity of the form and content that provides for intercultural knowledge of intercultural differences.
Socio-cultural awareness of learners involves essentially a capacity for encountering cultural diversity in intercultural communication between people coming from different socio-
cultural settings, a capacity for understanding another nation‘s mentality, cultural stereotypes
and moral values.
The above mentioned linguistic and extra linguistic information can be elicited from the text at various levels of language and sociocultural analysis done in classroom. The paper may be subjected to such analysis in classes of speech practice and cultural studies classes.
Firstly, an article headline is placed to the foreground of the analysis, its structural peculiarities, semantic and cultural values considered; secondly, the content and message come to the focus of intercultural study; finally, language figures, such as metaphors, allusions, play-on-words, if carefully explored, contribute to the sociocultural awareness of

language students – and it puts them more effectively on line with language and culture learning.
Any article is represented by its headline, i.e. the headline nominates the subject matter of the article in a compressed way and it allows a reader to obtain various types of information from it. Besides putting forward pure facts, a headline produces an emotional and expressive impact on the recipient, complemented by one more constituent of the impact, that of evaluation.
No doubt, newspaper headlines serve as a source of some cultural stereotypes that, if treated in a positive way, facilitate a better understanding between participants of intercultural communication due to the generalizing and protective functions of stereotypes. With ethnic groups related to the character traits of a personality [3], cultural stereotypes confirm and protect group values, beliefs and convictions, if their generalizing role, exactly, simplifying, is not exaggerated.
When discussed in the classroom, the articles are supplied with the tasks:
Read the headline and say, what the article is going to be about; Identify the key words in the headline; Find emotionally colored words if any; Analyze structural and semantic properties of the elements in the heading; Find abbreviations and acronyms if any, explain them; Analyze a role of the stylistic means in the heading; Say, what cultural values and stereotypes are revealed through the heading and so on.
The following headlines enable a reader to make judgments about some human values and relationships in different cultures.
A well proven truth is affirmed in the heading Bertie Gladwin:I graduated aged 90 – you're never too old to learn (Guardian, 2012). Education, literacy, erudition have never ceased to be the main goals and aspirations of the American people. So, the author maintains one of the basic postulates of the society.
Concern for children and their happy childhood is apparent in some other headlines Child Care Cuts; Cuts will fuel child poverty; Don’t rush talented child (ВВС, 2013).
The first two headings deal with children‘s health and education. According to these examples the government‘s reduction on childcare involves an aggravation of families‘ financial position, children‘s health deterioration and this fact is obviously treated negatively.
The third heading focuses on the hardships experienced by gifted pupils. The author points out, that both parents and teachers deprive such children of childhood trying to educate

them in a shortened period of time according to a stereotyped view that wasting time is sinful and the leisure time should be a small share in life.
Nearly every lexical unit in the headline Noncompete Clauses Increasingly Pop Up in
Array of Jobs (New York Times, 2014) is contextually emotional due to the author‘s indignant
attitude towards an absurd situation: an employee is forced to sign a contract, according to which he(she) is prohibited from working at a competing enterprise in the neighborhood for one-three years after the employment termination.
Stylistic means used in articles and their headlines may also disclose some cultural information. Imagery language (metaphors, metonymy, epithets, allusions, play-on-words and others), if carefully explored, considerably contributes to sociocultural awareness of language students.
Actually, allusions, in other words, intertextual elements, reinforce intercultural meanings, while related to particular cultural phenomena in the English-speaking world: literature, religion, politics, folklore, theater and history, in general. Most intertextuality
phenomena or ―… allusions serve to illustrate or expand upon or enhance a subject, but some
are used in order to undercut it ironically by the discrepancy between the subject and the allusion" [1, p.11].
Allusions engage the reader and often help the reader remember the message or theme of the passage, giving an example or getting a point across without going into a lengthy discourse. More than that, any allusion is charged with a sociocultural coloring that needs explaining in its native (foreign for a learner) linguacultural context.
«Does it mean seeing the country as a mighty power with a God-given mission to right global wrongs – rhetoric not heard since George W. Bush and the «Axis of Evil» days» (Newsweek, 2010, August, 16). In this case the author of the article has put in into the text the
phrase «Axis of Evil» that was coined and used by the former American President George Bush in his speech addressed to the Congress in 2002.
An attitude of disapproval is well enough apparent in the headline ―The Russian
Godfather who met his match.” (New York Times, 2013: March, 25).The heading reflects the content of the article, whose central figure is Boris Berezovsky, called ―Kremlin Godfather‖.
The heading O’Neill brands Russia negativity as a 'British mental disease' – reveals the famous writer‘s positive position in the question of Russia-Britain relationship and his disapproval of the British hostility and British prejudices similar to mental disorders
(Newsweek, 2012: Jan., 31).
Methodology
158
It is a good idea to suggest students translating a headline, especially, if it contains play-on-words or phraseological units. In this case a native linguacultural background of an allusion needs to be elicited from the authentic context, thoroughly explored and its meaning and usage ought to be viewed from the point of a learner in the frame work of his or her own native culture. It is hard work finding an appropriate equivalent in the language of translation, as it requires deep cultural knowledge, speech abilities and translation mastery. But it is a rewarding job that enables the learners to internalize cultural norms and models made up of culturally derived ideas and practices that are embodied, enacted, or instituted in everyday life activities.
One of the activities is the economic life of the society which is again in the focus of the article called "Burgernomics: When the chips are down” (Economist, 2010) – «Бургерномика: Пора жарить цыпочек». The play-on-words is based on the contamination of two words (“burger”- «гамбургер» и “economics”- «экономика») and the use of the idiom When the chips are down which translated literally means когда наступает решающий момент. Besides, the word chips taken alone refers to the sphere of fast food. The author ironically assesses the economic achievements of the countries in the sphere of trade, judging by the hamburgers‘ sale volumes. The learners managed to preserve the irony in the translated variant with the help of a catch phrase borrowed from a famous humorous story.
The metonymic opposition combined with personification is characteristic of the heading “When Wall Street Talks, Washington Listens” (Newsweek, 2010) and can be
translated like «Когда Уол Стрит говорит, Вашингтон слушает». This play on words may be partially based on the name of James Baldween‘s novel If Beale Street Could Talk
(Если Бийл-Стрит могла говорить).The ironic and bright heading discloses a very serious theme: it tells the reader about the blunders made by the biggest American banks in the situation of the economic crisis.
One more semantic, though comic, opposition is used in the heading “Сan Lucy, 39,
really be the oldest cat in the world? (Or is it just a shaggy dog story?)‖ (Daily Mail, 2011) –
«Действительно ли Люси, 39, самая старая кошка в мире? (Или все это чушь
собачья?». Here a word combination a shaggy dog can be substituted by a Russian
phraseological equivalent чушь собачья. Thus, the effect of the play-on-words grounded on the juxtaposition of the animal names got transferred in the translated variant.
In the article named Out of Desert Dust, a Miracle on a Shoestring (New York Times,
2014) - Oт пустыря до райского уголка… и без начального капитала the farmworkers collectively transformed unusable spaces into active and safe places having raised a small sum of money in the community. The phraseological unit on a shoestring was substituted by
Methodology

its phraseological equivalent. The play–on-words in the headline No Money, No Time (New
York Times, 2014) – Ни денег, ни времени is associated with a well known proverb Time is Money and it helps a learner to grasp the main idea of the text. It runs as follows: when we
find ourselves working against the clock to finish something, someone who isn‘t otherwise
poor, finds oneself in the situation of poverty of time.
The author of the article Highways Need Help, but Not This Way (New York Times,
2014) is concerned about tax increases in favor of the federal Highway Trust Fund which is the main financial source for maintaining or upgrading roads, bridges, tunnels and public transit to meet the increased demand. The play-on the meanings of the word way gives a hint to the play-on-words оn the analogy in the translation of the heading: Дорогам нужна
помощь, но не такой дорогой ценой.
The headline “If you work in a forestry company, you will probably have to log your time” (Guardian, 2002). – «Если вы работаете в лесопромышленной компании, вам,
вероятно, приходится «засекать» свое время» presents one more play-on-words, as direct and figurative meanings of the word ―to log” are played on: пилить лес, заготавливать, регистрировать.
Consequently, allusions as cultural markers connect the content of a text with the larger world, calling to mind the ideas and emotions, which contribute to the world image that the author reflects in the text.
Hence it appears that newspaper materials provide a learner with culturally-oriented information and shape out cultural knowledge and behaviors on a regular basis. Indeed,
sharing common cultural background facilitates a learner‘s better understanding of another person‘s mentality, moral values and conceptual world image.
