Investment management is a generic term that most commonly refers to buying and selling of investments within a portfolio and trading of securities to achieve a specific investment objective.
Investment management is the professional asset management of various securities (shares, bonds and other securities) and other assets (e.g., real estate) in order to meet specified investment goals for the benefit of the investors. Investors may be institutions (insurance companies, pension funds, corporations, charities, educational establishments etc.) or private investors.
The term asset management is often used to refer to the investment management of collective investments, while the more generic fund management may refer to all forms of institutional investment as well as investment management for private investors. Investment managers who specialize in advisory or discretionary management on behalf of (normally wealthy) private investors may often refer to their services as money management or portfolio management.
The provision of investment management services includes elements of financial statement analysis, asset selection, stock selection, plan implementation and ongoing monitoring of investments. Coming under the remit of financial services many of the world's largest companies are at least in part investment managers and employ millions of staff.
135
The term fund manager (or investment advisor in the United States) refers to both a firm that provides investment management services and an individual who directs fund management decisions.
According to a Boston Consulting Group study, the assets managed professionally for fees reached an all-time high of US$62.4 trillion in 2012, after remaining flat-lined since 2007. Furthermore, these industry assets under management were expected to reach US$70.2 trillion at the end of 2013 as per a Cerulli Associates estimate.
The global investment management industry is highly concentrated in nature, in a universe of about 70,000 funds roughly 99.7 % of the US fund flows in 2012 went into just 185 funds. Additionally, a majority of fund managers’ report that more than 50 % of their inflows go to just three funds.
The business of investment has several facets, the employment of professional fund managers, research, dealing, settlement, marketing, internal auditing, and the preparation of reports for clients. The largest financial fund managers are firms that exhibit all the complexity their size demands. Apart from the people who bring in the money (marketers) and the people who direct investment (the fund managers), there are compliance staff (to ensure accord with legislative and regulatory constraints), internal auditors of various kinds (to examine internal systems and controls), financial controllers (to account for the institutions’ own money and costs), computer experts, and back office” employees (to track and record transactions and fund valuations for up to thousands of clients per institution).
Key problems of running such businesses include:
revenue is directly linked to market valuations, so a major fall in as-
set prices can cause a precipitous decline in revenues relative to costs;
above-average fund performance is difficult to sustain, and clients
may not be patient during times of poor performance;
successful fund managers are expensive and may be headhunted by
competitors;
above-average fund performance appears to be dependent on the
unique skills of the fund manager; however, clients are loath to stake their investments on the ability of a few individuals they would rather see firmwide success, attributable to a single philosophy and internal discipline;
analysts who generate above-average returns often become sufficient-
ly wealthy that they avoid corporate employment in favor of managing their personal portfolios.
136
Investment management can take many forms. It can be done either by the consumer or a professional and can be passive, active, aggressive or conservative. It can refer to sophisticated trading techniques involving derivatives and alternative investments.

In 2001, the Moroccan Government, in cooperation with the private sector, developed a tourism strategy called “Vision 2010”. The strategy had three main components:
a) to develop six beach resorts on the Atlantic coast;
b) to renovate and expand existing tourism destinations (Casablanca, Fez, Marrakech, Tangier etc.);
c) to develop new regional tourism products.
The main objective was to triple Morocco’s tourism capacity in respect of the number of hotel beds and passenger seats. The strategy also included
137
an aggressive marketing campaign aimed at attracting 10 million visitors to the country in 2010.
For the six beach resorts, the Government sought participation by foreign investors through a public-private partnership (PPP) approach. Projects for the resorts were developed with the assistance of consultants, and 50 potential foreign investors were invited to bid for the projects. The Government invested in infrastructure at the sites, in order to provide them with water, electricity and transport connections. Other measures, such as tax exemptions and land concessions, were granted too.
By 2007, five consortia had been selected. The investors included developers and tour operators from Belgium, France, the Netherlands, South Africa and Spain.
Due to the financial crisis, which affected many of the investors, the Moroccan Government had to reschedule the end year to 2016. The Government has raised funds and made additional investments to help compensate for the withdrawal of some foreign investors. As of 2010, two resorts had started their operations.
