Whose Responsibility?
This is a story about four people: “Everybody”, “Somebody”, “Anybody” and “Nobody”. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that
because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it. It
ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody asked
Anybody.
Discuss the following:
1. In what ways are you responsible at home, in school and at
work?
2. What are you duties in these areas?
3. Provide examples showing how you take responsibility and how
you could become more responsible.

(Fairness)
Social justice is “justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society”. Classically, “justice” (especially
corrective justice or distributive justice) ensured that individuals both fulfilled their societal roles and received what was their due from society.
Social justice assigns rights and duties in the institutions of society,
which enables people to receive the basic benefits and burdens of cooperation. The relevant institutions can include education, health care, social security, labour rights, as well as a broader system of public services, progressive taxation and regulation of markets, to ensure fair distribution of wealth,
equal opportunity and equality of outcome.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_justice
The central idea of both fairness and justice is the same. They are
twin concepts concerned with processes and consequences. We tend to
speak in terms of fairness when we are dealing with the behavior of individuals and everyday interpersonal relationships. We talk about justice in the
context of broader social issues and institu-tional obligations to individuals.
Making decisions means having the authority to bestow benefits or
impose burdens. Fairness and justice establish moral standards for decisions
that affect others. Although the underlying concepts of fairness and justice
are simple, almost intuitive, applying them in real life proves very difficult.
First, fairness implies that we will make decisions in adherence to a
recognized standard without reference to one’s own feelings or inclinations.

83
Secondly, fairness also implies that our decisions will have freedom from
prejudice and impartiality for or against any side.
When attempting to be fair, remember this:
1. Disagreements and criticism of our decisions, including charges
of unfairness are inevitable: they come with the territory of decision making.
2. Generally, those who consider themselves winners in the decision will consider the result just, and those who see themselves as losers
consider it unjust.
3. Therefore, if you need to be liked or approved of by everyone,
avoid accepting responsibility that requires tough choices.
4. Otherwise, we must content ourselves with doing our very best
to reach a fair judgment based on personal conscience and ethically justified
standards of fairness.

Justice means everyone gets equal treatment under the country's laws.
It means giving deserved rewards and punishments impartially. That is, not
favoring one person over another because of their skin color; ethnic background, religion, or gender. This also applies on a personal level - not just
as it relates to the law. It means respecting each other's differences and doing your best to give everyone an equal chance.
Some examples of justice at home, in the classroom, in the community, and in the nation:
All the children at home must do their chores before watching
TV or going outside to play. No one is favored.
Everyone gets a turn to talk when there is a class discussion.
If someone is drunk and driving a car, that person is breaking
the law and, if caught, should be punished no matter who he or she is.
Everyone in our country who is accused or committing a crime
is entitled to a fair trial.
Think of another example of justice at home, at school, in the community, or in the nation. Draw a picture of that example of justice. Under
the picture, have them write the words, “This is an example of justice because...” complete the sentence with a brief explanation how the picture exemplifies justice. For example, you might draw a picture of a child holding
up an exam with an “A” on it, writing below: “This is an example of justice
because...an “A” is earned by all people who get a certain score.”

1. What would it be like if teachers gave good grades only to their
favorite students and not to everyone who earned them?
2. Why is it so difficult for us to treat each other fairly?
3. What does it mean to be partial?
4. When is it okay to be partial to someone or something? When is it
not okay?
5. What is the difference between being partial and being prejudiced?
6. A popular saying states that “justice is blind”. What does that
mean? Do you think justice in our country is really blind?

You are an employer who for budget reasons has to let go of one employee. What is fair? How will you make a fair decision? By: Merit?
Need? Might? Equality? Seniority? Effort? Who will you let go and
how will you explain it to them?
Able, your newest employee who is young and unmarried is your
best producer. He gets more work done effectively than any other
employee.
Nettie is a competent worker of four years, a single mother with
three small children at home. She needs the job most.
Oldham has worked for the company longest, for 18 years and is
two years aways from a pension.
Tryhard is a good producer with a terrific attitude and the hardest
worker you have.
Nepo, a competent employee is the son of one of the owners of the
company.

(Caring)
Сострадание (compassion) – сочувствие к чужому страданию;
Cicero once said, “In nothing do men more nearly approach [deity]
than by doing good to their fellow man.” Caring is at the heart of the Six
Pillars of Character. It provides the motivation for all the others. Michael
Josephson says this: “Caring means more than a concern for the well-being
of others. It is a form of passion that generates commitment and conviction
that allows us to endure, persevere and persist until we overcome whatever
obstacles may be in our way.”
Caring is to value, to show love, esteem, have a high regard and/or
concern for the well-being of others, the community, city, country, and
world. Caring is the heart of ethics. If we don’t care about others, and about
doing what is right and best, then it doesn’t matter how much we know
about the other pillars because we won’t follow them anyway. People of
character care about, and focus on, the overall good of everyone rather than
just their own interests.

Compassion motivates people to go out of their way to help physical,
spiritual, or emotional hurts or pains of another. Compassion is often regarded as having an emotional aspect to it, though when based on cerebral
notions such as fairness, justice and interdependence, it may be considered
rational in nature and its application understood as an activity based on
sound judgment. There is also an aspect of compassion which regards a
quantitative dimension, such that individual's compassion is often given a
property of “depth”, “vigour”, or “passion”. The etymology of “compassion” is Latin, meaning “co-suffering”. More involved than simple empathy, compassion commonly gives rise to an active desire to alleviate another's suffering.
Compassion is often, though not inevitably, the key component in
what manifests in the social context as altruism. In ethical terms, the expressions down the ages of the so-called Golden Rule often embodies by implication the principle of compassion: Do to others what you would have them
do to you.
