Другая причина:________________________________________
CHARACTER DECISIONS
Read each of the following situations and put an “X” by the choice that comes closest to stating what you would most probably do under the circumstances. Please try to honestly predict what you would do, not what you think you should do. If you cannot decide between several choices that have the same result but different reasoning, mark each option that states reasoning you agree with.
1. A close friend gets a job as assistant manager of a record
store. You visit her and she gives you three CDs saying, “The owner is really stupid and the inventory system is so bad here they never know what they have. Even my manager takes stuff home. You can have these if you want”. You would:
Take them since it is not wrong or illegal since even the manager
takes disks.
Take them since, whether it is legal or not, it is the owner’s fault for
having such a bad inventory system and you will have done nothing wrong because an employee gave them to you.
Take them even though you think it is wrong because you want the
disks and don’t want to pay for them.
Take them even though you think it is wrong because your friend
was just being nice and you
don’t want to embarrass her.
102
Politely refuse, making up an excuse like you don’t really need
them or you already have them.
Refuse and counsel your friend that she is, in effect, stealing from
the owners and that the fact that others are doing it doesn’t make it right.
Report your friend to the owner.
2. You go to a university that has an arrangement allowing
students to buy computer software at a 35% discount, provided they sign a written certification that it is for personal use. A good friend asks you to buy some software for him at the discount price. He will pay you. He says he needs the software but cannot afford to pay the full price. He says if he can’t get it at a discount he will find someone who has the software and make an illegal copy. You know that many students buy software for friends and relatives, and you assume the university knows this. You would:
Buy it for him. It is a common practice and if the computer software
company or the university wanted to stop it they would have developed better safeguards.
Buy it for him. Since you could have bought the software for your-
self, neither the university nor the computer software company loses anything.
Buy it only if you believe your friend really needs it and can’t af-
ford to pay the full price even though you think it is wrong to say it is for your personal use when it isn’t.
Buy it, though you think it is wrong to do so, since it would be
worse if your friend made an illegal copy; at least this way the computer software company gets something.
Make up an excuse as to why you can’t buy it for him. (For exam-
ple, tell him that there are additional requirements about the software relating to a current course.)
Tell him that you won’t do it, but try to help him get an illegal copy
from someone who has the software.
Tell him politely that you won’t do it because using the discount in
this way is wrong.
Tell him politely but firmly that you won’t lie for him and that you
think it would be wrong to make an illegal copy.

3. Your eldest child is about to enter school. The local public
school in your neighborhood that he will have to attend has a poor academic reputation and is known to have a problem with drug use on campus. Your sister lives in an adjoining neighborhood with a much better school. She is willing to let your child use her address as if it were your residence. This would allow your child to attend the better school. You know other people who have done this. In order for this to work, you would have to tell your
child to say he lives at your sister’s address, even though this is not true.
Though you could afford a private school, it would be financially difficult, and you don’t want to move to another neighborhood. You would:
Use your sister’s address since it is not wrong to do so. Schooling
is very important and it isn’t your fault that the school in your
neighborhood is not a good one.
Use your sister’s address since the residence rule is stupid and un-
fair.
Use your sister’s address as long as there was no specific law
against doing so. If the state wanted to prevent this they would make it illegal.
Use your sister’s address even though you think it is wrong to do.
Your child’s education is just too important to allow where you live
to make a difference.
Use your sister’s address even though you think it is wrong to do so
because others do it and you would be putting your own child at a disadvantage.
Discuss the matter with your child, explaining the importance of
schooling but that he would have to lie about his residence; then, let him decide.
Not use your sister’s address since it would be wrong to lie about
your child’s residence and to put your child in a position where he
must lie. However, since education is so important, you would make the financial sacrifice to either send him to a private school or move to another neighborhood.
Not use your sister’s address since it would be wrong to lie about
your child’s residence and to put your child in a position where he
must lie. However, since the cost of private school tuition would require a financial sacrifice and moving is such a difficult process, you would send him to a local school and make the best of it.

4. Your car’s rear bumper was damaged when it was hit by
another driver. The other driver has insurance. When you go to a garage to find out how much repairs will cost, the mechanic suggests that he can also fix a rear fender dent that you had before the accident. He says that you can claim the damage was caused by the recent collision. Otherwise, fixing the fender will be very expensive. He assures you that he has done it many times before and that you will have no trouble with the insurance company. You would:
Include the fender in your claim if you think that insurance rates are
too high and it’s only fair that someone gets some of that money back from the insurance company.
Include the fender in your claim since the mechanic suggested it
and it is apparently an expected and common practice.
Include the fender in your claim because it is an unexpected oppor-
tunity and you could not otherwise afford to fix the fender, though you think it is wrong to do so.
Politely decline the opportunity and only put in a claim for the actu-
al damage because no matter what he says you could get caught and be accused of fraud.
Politely decline the opportunity and only put in a claim for the actu-
al damage because it would be wrong to file a false claim.
Firmly decline the suggestion and tell him that you think it is
wrong.
Firmly decline the mechanic’s suggestion and report him to the in-
surance company.
5. Go back to each of the previous questions and CIRCLE the
number of the option that best states what you think you should do (what is the most ethically proper answer). Please note below the number of situations in which what you probably would do is different than what you think you should do: ____.
6. If there are any differences between what you would do and
what you should do, put an X by each of the following reasons that best explains your behavior:
In the last analysis, doing the right thing is not all that important to
me.
105
If something is important enough I am often willing to do whatever
is necessary.
I usually know what I should do but I don’t always have the will
power or strength of character to do it.
It is a very competitive world and sometimes you just have to do
whatever it takes to get what you want.
Most people are unethical and I see no reason to put myself at a dis-
advantage by playing by different rules.
Ethics is a luxury that one cannot always afford. Sometimes it’s just easier to do what you want to do. If something is legal and it won’t get me in trouble, I am often will-
ing to do it even if I think it is not entirely ethical.
I don’t know, that’s just the way I am. Another reason: _________________________________________
7. Filling out this questionnaire made me think more about
ethics and will change some of my behaviors.
___ Definitely ___ Probably ___ Probably Not ___ Definitely Not
Now, discuss these scenarios with the rest of the group.

(Values and Ethics)

It is a very recent attitude that we confront in today’s world. It is the
attitude that both our values and ethics are totally individual preferences.
According to this thinking, it’s no one else’s business what my values and ethics are. Not only should we not judge someone else’s values and ethics, but we shouldn’t even try to teach values and ethics to others, especially children. Let everyone be an individual, we’re told. Let everyone make his
own choices.
The trouble is that none of us live in a vacuum. What we do and say affect others around us. Because of that, everyone teaches values and ethics
107
because everyone has values and ethics. We demonstrate our values and ethics everyday by the choices we make and the actions we perform. The question then is not whether values and ethics should be taught, but rather which values and ethics bring the most benefits to ourselves and those around us?
Values are important beliefs and desires that shape attitude and motivate actions. A common misconception about values and ethics is that they are the same. But values are different than ethics. They refer to all our important beliefs, without necessarily referring to right and wrong. Ethics refers only to beliefs about moral right and wrong. Values are what is important to us; ethics tells us how to pursue our values.
Values and Ethics on a Deserted Island
SCENARIO: Your group has just been shipwrecked on a deserted island.
No one knows that you were out on a boat and so it doesn’t appear that any- one will be looking for you at sea. It’s time to make the best of this situa-
tion. It’s time to lay the foundation for this “little society.” What will the rules be? As a group, you have to decide. Write your group’s decisions.
How do you organize to make decisions?
Where do you live and with whom?
How do you get food and how do you eat? (For example, who grows
food? Who collects food? Who eats it and when?)
What do you wear? Where will you get clothes from?
How do you work? How do you assign the work? What work will you
do?
Who watches for rescue opportunities?
What happens if someone breaks the rules (for example, if someone
steals your coconut?)
What about man-woman things? (For example, marriage and privacy.)
