Exercise 1. Why is learning a foreign language important? Read the
quotes about learning languages. Choose 2 of them you like best, and

Exercise 2. There are many different reasons why people study
foreign languages, English in particular. Here are some of them.
to travel a broa d,
to get a good job,
to hav e somet h ing to do in your s pare ti me,
to be better educated,
to be familiar with social and cult ural life in oth er countries,
to be able to participate in conversations with people from
English-s pea king countr ies.
Name some other reasons and say which of them you consider more
(less) important for studying foreign languages. Tell the others about your
reasons for learning English thoroughly. Do you think that learning
English is an obligatory part of your education? Why or why not?
Exercise 3. Answer the questions.
1) What foreign languages can you sp eak? How many of them
would you like to know?

3) How is the progress in science and technology connected with
the problem of learning languages?
4) What do you find out for yourself about the countries and
people when learning foreign languages?

the necessity and difficulties of learning English.

Exercise 6. Read and translate the text for getting the detailed content.
English today
The modern world is becoming smaller all the time. Every day
distances between different countries seem less. For this reason it's
becoming more and more important to know foreign languages,
especially Engli sh.
English is very popular nowadays. It's the language of
computers, science, business, politics, sports, arts and music. It's
spoken all over the world. It is the official language of the United
Kingdom, New Zealand, the United States of America, and Australia.
It is one of the official languages of Canada, the Irish Republic, and
the Republic of South Africa.
Many English words were borrowed from the language of Angles
and S a xo ns. H un dr eds of F renc h w or ds ca me i nt o E n gl is h. T hes e F r ench
words didn't crowd out corresponding Anglo-Saxon words. There exist
"act" and "deed", "beautiful" and "pretty", "form" and "shape".
Some new wor ds wer e brou ght b y tr ader s a nd tr a vell ers . T hes e
words came from all parts of the world: "umbrella" – from Italian,
"tea" – from Chinese, "cigar" – from Spanish.
Many of the new English words – especially new scientific ones –
have been made from Latin and Greek words instead of English ones.
"Telephone" for instan ce, was made from Greek words "f ar" and "talk".
To know English today is absolutely necessary for every
educated person, for every good specialist. But learning the language
is not easy. It's a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and
patience. But it is worth doing.
English is taught throughout the world and a lot of people speak
it quite well. In Russia English is very popular, it is studied at schools,

colleges and universities. Knowing English well is one of the main
requirements to graduates of Russian high technical schools which
want to bec ome pr ofess ionals and successful specialists in t heir field.
Exercise 7. Answer the questions.

Exercise 8. Fill in the blanks using the words from the text.

Exercise 12. Make up a plan (logical scheme) and then summarize
the c ontent of the t ext "Englis h Today " in writ ing.

Exercise 13. Read the text to find some more ideas. Fill in the gaps,
usin g the word given in cap itals at the end of a li ne to for m a word
that fits in the space in the same line. There is an example at the
