1. What is a healthy work environment?
2. Why is it important to have a healthy work environment?
Healthy Work Environment
No one wants to hate coming into work. When workers spend time in a positive work environment, it shapes their mindset about wellness in a variety of ways.
If youve ever been in a work environment where it feels heavy, negative, and unproductive, you know what its like to be in a mentally and physically draining place. Its not healthy in any way, so its very important that company leadership and workers come together to maintain a good work culture and environment.
A healthy workplace is one where both employees and management work together to promote healthy actions and behaviors to keep everyone safe and well.
A non-toxic, healthy environment leads to an opportunity for open discussion, strong professional relationships, and increased productivity.
Quite a few factors go into what makes a healthy work environment. For right now, the obvious one is an actual physical space that is safe and clean –
31
well sanitized, socially-distanced workspaces, clean air filters, etc. – but it goes beyond that, of course.
A healthy workplace is one where employees thrive in their work projects and feel happy while also staying physically and mentally healthy. Theyre productive and feel supported, which leads to reduced absenteeism, illness, conflict, and, ultimately, turnover.
Ex. 8. Read the text and answer the questions.
Creating a Positive Work Environment
Happy employees are good employees. Even small details can impact their productivity and performance. Remember that, and youll become a leader of the best-performing team ever. These ideas will help you succeed.
A healthy diet is scientifically proven to affect our physical condition, so people should take care of nutrition. The problem is, most of us are lazy to eat well despite the fact we understand the effect of healthy food. To help your employees diversify a diet, supply them with products that improve brain functions (a cup of green tea), let them stay focused (coffee beans), and deliver vitamins (fresh fruits).
Health depends on far more factors than nutrition only. Take care of employees health by organizing a proper workplace: temperature level, ventilation, light, office furniture – they all influence physical condition, boost spirits, prevent problems with back and neck, and make your employees feel comfortable about the place of work.
Team building enhances social relations between staff members, creating the positive working environment between them. Collaboration and task delegation lead to better productivity and more tasks completed daily. Team spirit encourages goals achievements. Most common team-building techniques include corporate events, office parties, online communication with colleagues, and collaborative tasks. Make sure your employees know each other, have no problems
32
with co-operation, respect other teams members, and collaborate with everyone efficiently.
Self-development is essential for our career growth. To stay competitive, you need to work on improving your skills, as well as provide your employees with opportunities to do the same: seminars, conferences, and courses are the ways to grow professionally.
The digital era makes career development easy of access, as we can master skills or get new knowledge online. All these things not just help you grow but create a positive working environment in your office as well. Confidence in yourself and your knowledge is significant for better motivation, productivity, and attitude toward things you do
Try to support your employees for initiatives. Encourage them to take risks, put the companys needs first, and strive for better results at work. An initiative employee is a real catch for your business; as such people always help it flourish. So, be generous with bonuses: raise, gifts, extra vacation days, and days off are good ideas to motivate your employees to be proactive.
People are social beings, and that is why communication plays a significant role for our comfort. Encouraging your employees to socialize, you will enhance their creativity and productivity at work. Create the environment that would facilitate open collaboration, sharing ideas, complaints, advice, and whatever coworkers want to discuss in a casual atmosphere. Make them feel free to express thoughts and share impressions, which will foster the growth of confidence and unity.
It would be a good thing if you organized a leisure area in the office, a place where people could communicate to each other in spare time.

Ex. 13. Read the text and say how you should organize your workplace to
enhance productivity.
Workplace Organization
To enhance productivity, pay attention to your workplace: a table, all-inone PC, comfortable chair, notebooks for drafts, and even a plant – everything should be at hand as it influences your performance at work. In a perfect world, your workplace should inspire you: photos, motivational quotes, funny pictures, or inspiring thoughts from your mentors help a lot.
With workspace organization being time-consuming, you might need actionable tips and advice from experts. Dozens of books and hundreds of articles on the topic are hard to handle, but this infographic combines key points to remember and take into consideration if you decide to re-design working environments for better.
Ex. 14. Read the text and say how a day outside the office can influence employees.
A Day Outside The Office
Changing a working environment for a day or two can boost inspiration and motivation. Why do not give your employees a chance to spend a day outside the office and choose an alternative workspace for that time?
It goes to make people happier, build trust, and enhance team building. Working a day from home, cafe, or co-working space (they name it!) can influence efficiency and productivity beyond the call of duty.

B. Helen: Thank you very much. Your support is very important to me.

Ex. 17. Read the text and give five reasons why workplace dress code is important.
Proper Dress Code is Important
The way you dress shows your interests, status, attitude, and personality and communicates a lot of non-verbal clues about you to others. Society expects you to conform to a dress code whether it is at home, office, social function, picnics, parties, beaches, school, college or academic institutions. What may be acceptable in one country may not be so in another. Culture, tradition, and socio-economic factors have an influence on the way you dress.
Depending on which industry your company operates in, having an appropriate dress code has an important bearing on your firms brand image, productivity, and employee morale.
Here are five reasons why workplace dress code is important.
37
Firstly, it helps you with corporate identity.
Just as your brand gets a good visibility through appropriate colors, shades, and fonts used, the way your employees dress help in creating a corporate identity for your firm which helps your stakeholders recognize you easily. In some companies, all employees including the CEO follow the same dress code and that helps in creating a positive image for the company.
Secondly, it keeps employee distractions away.
If employees wear different styles of clothes – some will be wearing casuals, some formals, and others may wear blazers or suits. In such a scenario, those wearing colorful casuals may attract glances or cause a distraction to others. Moreover, customers who come to the office will also not feel any uniformity about the companys operations. Clothing that reveals too much of cleavage, back, chest, arms, and legs is considered to be inappropriate and if a company follows a uniform, such issues can be taken care of.
Thirdly, dress code creates a healthy work culture.
Having a dress code for different categories of employees can create a healthy work culture in the office. For example, the administrative staff may be having a particular color combination for their work dress, while those in customer service or marketing may have a different style. This helps in team building among departments and also helps customers identify the functionalities related to each employee better. Those adhering to a dress code report positive outcome on productivity and team building.
Then, it displays professionalism.
Adhering to a dress code at office enables the company and its employees to give the impression that they are professional in their work. Managers may have to wear suits, ad full-sleeve shirts, and black shoes, while creative people may be allowed to wear a slack shirt. On weekends or extra working hours, some companies allow employees to wear T-shirts and bermudas. That helps prevent monotony and it gives creative freedom to employees to dress in a way they like for a day in a week.
38
Professionalism is also valued by shareholders, the media, and investment
analysts.
The fifth reason making dress code so important is undesirable perfume
and makeup.
Dress code is not related to dressing alone but the use of perfumes, deodorants makeup, and beauty enhancements. Use of beauty enhancements may be attractive at social functions and picnics but not in an office where it can be offensive to some. It can also convey a poor image of your company to your customers and stakeholders.
Having a dress code with or without uniform can help companies to make employees happy and focus on their work. It improves productivity and helps develop a healthy work culture in your organization. Many successful companies have judiciously used dress code for their various categories of employees with a positive impact on employee performance and bottom line. Conforming to the companys dress code helps employees feel confident and perform better. It also reduces the costs associated with buying and wearing dresses to work.
