Grammar section
I. Read the text and find sentences with the following tenses: Past
Continuous; Past Perfect; Present Simple Passive.
Well, okay, I’ll tell you this story. To tell the truth, it wasn't the best summer
for me! You know, I’m not paid millions so I can't afford to rest for a long time,
but last year I was really tired, so I definitely needed a vacation!
I had quite a smart plan: I was going to work all June and I was promised 3
weeks off in July! I’m used to doing everything in advance, so I decided to call my
travel agent in May. But when I called her for the first time she was busy with
another client. When I called her for the second time, she was on vacation, and
then something else happened... On the whole I had called her four times before I
managed to talk to her and order tickets.
To cut the long story short, by the end of the June I had finished all my
business. I was ready for my trip when my telephone rang. I picked up the phone,
and what did I hear? I was told that my flight was cancelled! It was awful! I tried
to make a row, but it was in vain. Of course, they promised to give me my money
back, but it was too late. Anyway, I didn't have much time to go somewhere else.
So I spent my holidays on nothing.
Better luck next time... I hope ...
II. Explain the difference between Past Continuous; Past Perfect;
Present Simple Passive (See Appendix with the rules and explanations).
III. Put the verb into the correct form.
India (to be) a vast country with a range of diverse cultures, lifestyles,
religions, social beliefs, norms, rituals, and rites. This diversity of the region (to
be) in part because of its varying geo-climatic conditions and also because of the
migration of different ethnic groups from other countries. These varied cultural
influences (to be reflected) in their clothing too – there are so many different styles
of clothing, throughout the country.
Fabric, textile printing, embellishments, clothes (to be) all written in golden
letters in its history – it is a part and parcel of the culture of Indians.
25

A very special thing about Indian clothing is that not much (to change) –
Indians still (to love) their traditional clothes almost as it (to be) all those years
ago. Both men and women are used to wearing both western clothes as well
as traditional clothes, depending on the occasion, climate, etc.
Unit 3. HOW TO WRITE A FASHION DESIGNER CV?
I. Read the text and answer the questions below.
There are plenty of opportunities out there in the ever-evolving and changing
world of fashion, but there's also plenty of competition. Since fashion moves at
such speed, an updated and stylish CV can give you an advantage over other
applicants. It's important to make a CV that tells employers what they want to
know. In this article, we explore how to create your fashion designer CV with tips,
advice and an example to help you stand out.
Although the specifics may vary, every CV follows universal rules. If you
think that a new role at a fashion company is your ideal position, make sure to
include the information below in writing or updating your fashion designer CV:
1. Personal information
Make sure to add relevant personal and contact information. This includes
your name, address, mobile number and email. Details such as your profile on
professional networking websites or a link to your portfolio are also relevant, as
they can further expand upon your artistic skills and attributes.
2. Summary or profile
No more than a small paragraph in length, your profile is a way of
presenting a snapshot of your accomplishments as they apply to fashion. Make sure
to write a personal statement that keeps the recruiter interested. You want to
provide information that relates to the role for which you're applying.
Include any educational or commercial experience, your most important
accomplishments and skills you have within fashion. Sum up any personal
26

strengths or professional knowledge here to show that you're a perfect fit for the
role.
3. Experience
Your work history section is a great place to highlight any previous work
experience that makes you stand out. Similarly to the summary, specify this
information to the position to which you apply. Building up your network
and portfolio is important in fashion. Include any experience you may have
interning or volunteering for a fashion brand. For example, if you interned at the
London Fashion Week, mention this alongside your previous roles to give you an
advantage with potential employers.
4. Education
The fashion industry is very competitive. To become a fashion designer, you
most likely need a degree, an HND (Higher National Diploma) or a foundation
degree in a subject area that combines design and technical skills. This section is
where you can demonstrate your educational background in art and design, fashion
design, fashion business, garment technology, graphic design or textile design.
5. Skills
Your CV skills section is an amazing way to show off the tangible,
intangible, hard and soft skills that make you the ideal candidate. These can
include a wide variety of skills that apply to fashion. You can highlight tangible
skills like CAD training (Computer-Aided Design) here and subtle traits employers
want to see, like keen commercial and market awareness from a previous role in
retail management.
6. Accomplishments
This is the part of your CV in which you can show your most important
accomplishments. Make sure to add any awards, volunteering roles or successful
projects you've participated in recently. These may show potential employers that
you're ambitious and enjoy challenges.
27

Fashion designer’s key responsibilities
It’s important to know what kinds of responsibilities you may face daily
before applying for a job in the industry. There can be many variations between
one designer's responsibilities to the next, depending on the market you're involved
in and the type of designer you are or want to become. The three main types of
designers are:
High-street designers: the most dynamic designers manufacture garments
for well-known brands where seasonal trends and popular influences play a
key role in the design process.
Ready-to-wear designers: these designers have established their reputations
and create one-off collections of ready-to-wear garments, usually produced
in relatively small numbers.
Haute couture designers: they spend a large amount of time producing one-
of-a-kind garments for the catwalk.
Generally, fashion designers have these key responsibilities in their roles:
- Engage in the current world of fashion, looking for emerging fashion trends
and general trends relating to fabrics, colours and shapes.
- Understand design as a technical skill, trained perspective to produce
patterns and technical specifications for designs.
- Plan and develop ranges, often based on a theme.
- Work with other members of a design team, such as buyers and forecasters,
to develop products to meet a brief.
- Work closely with sales, buying and production teams to ensure items to suit
the customer and market.
- Frequent trade shows and other manufacturers to source, select and buy
fabrics, trims, fastenings and embellishments.
- Supervise the creation of specific designs.
- Adapt existing designs for the mass market.
- Showcase your designs at fashion shows or other trade shows.

Tips to write a fashion designer CV
Beyond ensuring your CV follows the correct template and includes every
bit of information that may make you stand out, here are some great tips that can
improve it even more:
Clickable links: you want any links included to be clickable, but also make
sure they’re print-friendly. Doing so may allow potential employers that see a
printed version of your portfolio to type the link on their browser and go to your
website.
Prioritize education if you’re an entry-level candidate: make sure to start
with your educational experience first. From there, focus on any industry
certifications or soft skills that make you a good candidate.
Be specific: when it comes to the objective or personal statement sections of
your CV, the more specific you are, and the better. Only providing vague
information can make your experience appear less important, but being as specific
as possible demonstrates exactly why this particular experience matters for the role
you're applying for.
Use industry-specific language: they indicate that you have in-depth
knowledge of fashion and design. They also demonstrate that you may have
experience and know-how professionals in the area communicate.
