Nick: What course are you doing?
Peter: I’m doing a Bachelor’s degree in economics. In a year,
I’m going to become an economist. I like my future profession very
much.
Nick: But I chose a Bachelor’s degree course in civil engineer- ing. I hope I’ll graduate from the University in four years and be-
come a highly-qualified civil engineer.
Peter: Do you live in a hall of residence? I haven’t seen you there.
Nick: No, I live with my parents. Come to see me at my place some time.
Peter: Thank you. I’ll come. Good-bye.
Nick: Good-bye.

Dialogue 2
Talking of Studying at the University
Ivan: Pete, I’d like to ask you about your University.
Pete: What are you interested in, Ivan? I am ready to answer
all your questions. Do you want to go to Shukhov Belgorod State Technological University?
Ivan: Yes, I do. I want to know more about your University and then I will choose which higher educational institution to go to. How long does a Bachelor’s degree course last?
Pete: It lasts for four years.
Ivan: What degree courses does the University offer?
Pete: You may choose any of the following courses: civil en-
gineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, economics and many others.
Ivan: What subjects are the most important ones for a future mechanical engineer specialising in machine tools?
21
Pete: First of all you must be good at drawing and mathematics
as you’ll have to know technology of production, metal control and so on. And certainly you’ll have to know different types of machine
tools very well.
Ivan: Oh, it is really interesting. Have you studied programmable controlled lathes yet?
Pete: No, I haven’t yet, I’m going to do it next term.
Ivan: What are such lathes used for?
Pete: You know, in recent years space exploration requires
precise instruments.
Ivan: Thank you very much, Pete.
Pete: Not at all. I’ll be very glad to see you among the students
of the University.

Dialogue 3
A Seminar on Electrical Engineering
Prof. Smirnov: Well, let’s begin our seminar. If you were at- tentive enough last time, you might have noticed that something went wrong with our experiment on semiconductors. Which of you is eager to express your opinion?
22
Student Ivanov: I’m of the opinion that we chose the wrong
material. If we had taken silicon instead of germanium, the experiment would have been a success.
Student Klimova: You may be right, Ivanov, but the thing is that the voltage we used in that case was rather low. If we wish to gain better results, we’ll have to apply a higher voltage.
Prof. Smirnov: Splendid, Klimova! You’ve hit the right spot!
Student Sokolov: As far as I understand electronics is a branch
of physics that deals with electrons, protons, neutrons and other particles. Why should we bother ourselves with semiconductors at all?
Prof. Smirnov: On the one hand, you are right, Sokolov, semiconductors are materials for radio electronics that deals with their atomic activity. On the other hand, how can you become an electrical engineer in our days without having an idea about semiconductors and the like?
Student Klimova: I hear the bell ringing. Shall we have a break?
Prof. Smirnov: Do, please! After the break, we’ll continue our
discussion.

TEXT 2A
MY STUDIES
My name is Boris Klimov. I am a first-year undergraduate student of Shukhov Belgorod State Technological University. I am studying for a Bachelor’s degree. I am doing a civil engineering course. I didn’t have to take entrance examinations. To go to University I had to pass the school-leaving examinations called the Unified State Examinations in Mathematics, Physics and Russian. They were held at school, and I received high marks. I was enrolled in the University in 2014. I am a full-time student, which means that I take a full load of course work each academic term: I attend classes, lectures and seminars. A lot of young people enrol in correspondence and distance learning courses.
My Bachelor’s degree course lasts four years. The academic year begins in September and ends in June. There are two terms in it. So I take end-of-term tests and examinations twice a year, that is in January and June. If I pass them successfully, I am granted a monthly scholarship. I have a two-month summer vacation and a two-week winter vacation every academic year.
I attend the University on weekdays. I have no classes on Sunday. At the University, classes begin at 8.15 in the morning and are over at 3.55 in the afternoon. During the first year, the students are taught different subjects of general nature. My favourite ones are

ments. Project work is extensively supported by industry to provide insight into the demands of civil engineering practice. Every day I usually have three or four classes, lectures or seminars which are all an hour and a half in length. During a long forty-five
year onwards, the students take some special subjects of their chosen profession. Much of the coursework is related to laboratory experi
minute break I go to the university canteen or café to have my midday meal.
I go to the University library after my classes. I am in the habit of doing my homework there. But a lot of my classmates prefer doing it at home.
I live with my parents. I have to take a trolley-bus or a bus to get to the University. It usually takes me about twenty minutes to reach it. Those studying away from home are given accommodation in one of the halls of residence situated near the University and students walk there. I am a diligent student. I don’t miss any classes, lectures or seminars and always do my best to prepare properly for them.
