2. Read and translate the following text.
Nautical charts or navigation charts are the charts used by the mariners at sea.
Nautical charts are a graphic representation of a maritime area. They also represent the coastal regions surrounding this area. They show the depths of the water in the area and the heights of the land and the topography of the area. They give details of the areas where there are hazards and must be avoided. They show the location of natural and manmade aids. They also give you information about the tides and currents. These charts can be on paper as well as on a computer. Each ship is provided with both forms of nautical charts. They help the mariners to understand where they exactly are and how they should proceed.

The mаrinеr should аlwауs use the lаrgеst sсаlе сhаrt аррrорriаtе fоr his
рurpоsе. А smаll еrrоr in lауing down а position may mean оnlу а few mеtгеs оn а lаrgе scale сhаrt, whеrеаs оn а smаll sсаlе it may mean sеvеrаl саblеs. The lаrgеr sсаlе of the сhаrt, the gгеаtеr detail that саn bе shown оn it. Each Аdmirаltу сhаrt, оr sеriеs of сhаrts, is designed fоr а раrtiсulаr рurроsе. Lаrgе sсаlе сhаrts аrе intended fоr еntеring hаrbоurs оr аnсhоrаgеs оr fоr passing сlоsе to navigational hаzаrds. Medium sсаlе сhаrts аrе usuаllу рublishеd as sегiеs of сhаrts intended fоr navigation аlоng соаsts, while smаll sсаlе сhаrts аrе intended fоr оffshоrе nаvigаtiоn.
Changes in depths
In certain areas where the nature of the seabed is unstable, depths may change
by 1metre or more in a matter of months after a new survey. In this case it is virtually impossible to keep the charts corrected even though frequent surveys are carried out. When navigating in such areas with small margins of depth is below the keel, the mariner should ensure that he obtains the latest known depths from the local authorities. For example, coral reefs can grow as much as 0,05 m. in a year, or 5m. in a century. Shifting banks or sand waves may alter depths, or may move or uncover wrecks neat them.
Chart correction
Marine navigation charts are in constant use by navigators. But conditions at
sea and under the sea (the seabed and the features charted) keep changing and so we must have the latest information on them for safety. Since information is changing constantly, there has to be a foolproof, controlled and approved system of chart correction.
Hydrographic organizations that produce charts are responsible for their
correction. Old or uncorrected charts should never be used for navigation. The chart in use must always be corrected to the latest notices to mariners on board.
All charts should be updated regularly to maintain accuracy and safety.
Updates are released in Admiralty Notices to Mariners weekly. Second Officers on ships are responsible for chart correction. They receive the notices and cross reference them with which charts they have on board. They then correct them. This is a continuous process, and a critical one. The safety of the crew, cargo and the ship depends on a systematic and accurate means of chart correction.
