10. Read and translate the passages from the Pilot book.
1. An obstruction lies 6 miles WNW of Batu Karang Pematon and two
dangerous wrecks lie 6,5 miles N.
2. Off-lying dangers. Numerous wrecks, the positions of which can be seen on
the chart, lie within 20 miles of the terminals.
3. There are numerous wrecks along the coast, in particular between Beachy
Head and Dungeness and up to 9 miles offshore. Many of these wrecks stand well above the seabed and may need to be avoided.
4. Hastings Shoal (50º50'•N, 0º36'•E) lies 8 cables S of the breakwater at
Hastings. Four Fathoms Sand Ridge (50º49'•N, 0º39'•E) lies 4 miles S of Hastings and extends NE merging into the shoal bank bordering the shores of Rye Bay. Depths over the ridge are irregular, with the least depth being over Fairlight Knoll at the NE extremity of the ridge.
5. The dominate feature offshore is the Goodwin Sands, which lie on the E side
of The Downs and Gull Stream and parallel to the coast from South Foreland to Ramsgate. The Goodwin Sands are moved by the tidal streams and their form can be altered extensively as a result. There are large drying patches on the sands along their E and N borders, which lie up to 6 miles from the coast.
6. A wreck, with a mast showing about 2 m above the water, was reported
(1987) in approximate position 3,5 miles ESE of Karang Pasir: another wreck, with its mast showing about 5m. above the water, was reported (1993) to lie 3,5 miles farther E.
7. Two dangerous wrecks lie about 17 miles W of the outer leading light, the
NE wreck is marked by a light-buoy (N cardinal pillar). Two more dangerous wrecks, both unmarked, lie respectively 8 miles and 4,24 miles WNW of the same leading light; the latter wreck is located very close S of the outer leading line.
8. A depth of 20,1 m (11 fm) was reported in 1987 approximately 1,25 miles
SSW of Pulua Lighthouse, and a wreck with a depth of 7,0 m (23 ft) over it, lies 3 miles S of the lighthouse.
9. Karang Sarang, a rocky patch which dries, lies 2 miles NE of Tanjung Kait;
the village of Karangsarang is situated on the coast S. Fishing slakes are erected in depths from 10 m to 13 m about 1 mile NNE of Karang Sarang.
10. Vergoyer is a narrow sand bank, which runs 15 miles NE from the vicinity
of 50º26'•N, 1º02'•E. It lies about 5 miles to seaward of Bassure de Baas and runs

parallel to it. The E side of the bank is sleep-to and the sea breaks over the bank in bad weather.
11. Calot Shad, a bank of sand and stones which dries, and extends from the
S side of Berwick nearly across the harbour, marked on its E and S sides by two light­buoys (both starboard hand).
12. A large rocky ledge, with above water and drying rocks on it, extends from
the N shore to mid-channel and lies 3 miles WSW of Sandilands Island; a rocky patch, with 2 m or less over it, extends 1 cable SW from the S point of the ledge; a rock, with 2 m or less over it, lies 1 cable from the S shore and 3 cables ESE of the rocky patch, mentioned above.
13. Les Ecamais are two groups of scattered banks formed by Grands Ecamais,
least depth 12 m and Petits Ecamais, least depth 11 m. The banks lie to seaward of the general line of the 20 m depth contour and consist of sand, gravel and shell, which are dangerous in heavy seas.
