Stool is the waste matter discharged from bowels. Following the digestion and absorption of
essential food ingredients in the stomach and intestines, the undigested food and unabsorbed
secretions of the stomach, liver, pancreas and intestines appear in the stool. Other things
found in stool include desquamated epithelial cells from anywhere in the gastrointestinal
tract, debris of all kinds and a large bulk of bacteria. The bacteria play an important role in
bilirubin metabolism. If digestion is impaired, food remnants and water content are greatly
increased ( e.g., diarrhoea) and many of these remnants can be identied through microscopic
examination. The kind of food also affects the quantity of faecal material; vegetable, high bre
containing diet increases the amount, while a diet with a large portion of meat in it decreases
the amount of stool formation.
