АЭРОПОРТЫ БЕРЛИНАНАЧИНАЮТЗАБАСТОВКУ

Берлинские аэропорты в понедельник, 13 марта, отменят 660 рейсов из-за забастовки сотрудников наземных служб. Об этом сообщает Reuters.

Вчастности, в аэропортах будут аннулированы 650 вылетов. Представители аэропортов отметили, что речь идёт об отмене практически всех рейсов в Берлине.

Флагманский перевозчик Германии Lufthansa на своём сайте объявил, что в понедельник аннулирует рейсы между немецкой столицей, Мюнхеном и Франкфуртом-на-Майне. Кроме того, от полётов в Берлин в этот день отказались Air Berlin, British Airways, EasyJet и Ryanair.

Сотрудники наземных служб протестуют, требуя увеличения заработной платы с 11 до 12 евро в час. Руководство воздушных гаваней предлагает повысить им зарплату всего на 10 центов.

Забастовка началась в ночь на понедельник. Она продлится 25 часов.

Вноябре 2016 года Lufthansa отменила около двух тысяч рейсов из-за забастовки пилотов. Сбой в графике перевозчика коснулся 115 тысяч пассажиров по всему миру.

Pilots at one of India's biggest airlines could stop flying with their expat colleagues because they're paid less.

The National Aviators Guild, a labor union representing more than 1,000 Indian pilots at Jet Airways, says it is taking a stand against discrimination. It says Indian pilots have to work longer for lower wages than pilots hired by the airline from overseas.

“[Expat pilots] work for eight weeks and get two weeks off”, NAG President told CNNMoney. “They're trying to make us work for 11 weeks to get the two weeks off, which we feel is unfair”.

The union had directed its members to stop working with the airline's expat pilots from Monday. It called off that strike over the weekend after being promised talks this week with airline management.

The threat of a strike hasn't gone away entirely and will depend on the outcome of those negotiations.

Jet Airways says it has to hire expats at a higher cost because Indian pilots won't fly certain aircraft, such as Boeing 737.

An airline spokesperson said it had to cover gaps caused by a shortage of skilled Indian pilots.

According to the airline, only about 8% of its 2,000 pilots are expats. The spokesperson added that Jet Airways had hired more than 400 Indian pilots in the past 16 months.

Expat pilots are employed by several airlines in India, where the aviation industry is growing at almost 20% per year and could become the world's third-largest by 2020.

According to government figures cited by local media, around 400 of India's 6,300 pilots come from overseas.

Expat pilots are also in demand elsewhere in Asia: China has been offering six-figure salaries for foreign pilots willing to come fly in the country.

But some have attracted controversy recently. One expat pilot at the airline was accused of assaulting a company trainer last month.

For now at least, the Indian pilots are ready to sit down and talk about continuing to work with their better paid colleagues.

“We will discuss it, then only we can decide [a] further course of action”, NAG President said. «We are trying to improve our working conditions, which we want a little bit similar to the expats».

SCHOOL BUS STRIKE AVERTED, CONTRACT AGREED UPON

Avoiding a potential work stoppage, Westport bus drivers agreed to a collective agreement late Wednesday night.

The contract between the town’s school bus drivers and their employer, Dattco, will run through Sept. 30, 2020, according to the president of the labor union that represents the school bus workers.

He was encouraged by the result of long and hard negotiations that yielded a bump in pay, among other gains. He described the outcome of negotiatuins as «nothing but

improvements including substantial wage increases» in a text message.

The Union President complimented the union negotiating committee which he said, “stood tall for their member co-workers through hard bargaining until the end”.

“Great members who deserve what they were able to achieve”, He said of the wage increases which range from an extra $2.15-$3.75 added to the drivers’ hourly wages. The exact details of the contract were no available as of press time.

The threat of a bus strike was real enough to warrant cautionary emails detailing alternative plans for the school district in case bus workers decided to strike. On May 3, bus drivers voted to authorize their union to strike. Despite the authorization, there was never a disruption in school bus service to the town.

The company tweeted shortly after the contract agreed upon: “Bus drivers settle labor contract with Dattco – strike avoided!» The tweet was capped with a school bus emoji.

As protests continued for a fourth day in major Turkish cities on Monday, Prime Minister said the demonstrations were the work of extremists. He considers that political opponents try to overthrow his government. But Turkey’s president called for calm from all sides and said protests and demonstrations were a natural part of democracy.

Protesters gathered again in Istanbul and other cities Monday evening, after security forces used tear gas on crowds of mostly youthful demonstrators in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.

For the first time, deaths were reported at two demonstrations: one protester died in Istanbul after a vehicle slammed into a crowd there late Sunday, The Associated Press reported, citing an Ankara-based medical official. And in the southern border town of Antakya, an opposition party deputy reported that a 22-year-old man was killed by a shot from a police vehicle. The Turkish PM accused the main opposition party of using the demonstrations for political gain. He suggested the possibility of foreign provocation, although he did not specify its origin.

“Our intelligence agency has their own investigation on that – there is no need to disclose them as this or that”, he said.

He spoke at a news conference before leaving for an official visit to Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Opponents called his decision to go for the overseas trip irresponsible.

President spoke on Monday in Izmir, where thousands of demonstrators had battled the police overnight. He underlined the importance of democratic opposition in political life.

While the Prime-Minister referred to his parliamentary majority as a right to carry out policies as he saw fit, the President stressed that true democracy “does not only mean elections”. “There is nothing more natural than various ways of expression other than elections if there are different views, different situations, objections”, he said. “Peaceful protests are surely a part of that”.

Details of the unrest at Wits University on Tuesday were widely shared on social media. Some protesters threw rocks as police and private security guards tried to clear the scene.

However, Twitter users – using the hashtag #feesmustfall – said that some students also offered flowers to the police and shouted “we want peace”.
