4.Read and translate the text

Changing the silhouette of a skirt (its outer shape) is one of the focal point for designers who wish to change the look and direction of fashion. A basic skirt hangs straight from the hipline to the hem. It can be changed by increasing or decreasing the sweep of the hemline, moving the skirt away from or closer to figure, or raising or lowering the waistline. The length of the skirt can be different as well (figure 7.1).

Figure 7.1

The skirt has four foundations based on the type of the silhouette (figure 7.2).

1)Straight (rectangular) shape – the basic skirt that hangs straight from hipline to hemline.

2)A-shape (triangular) - the skirt that falls away from the hip flaring out at the hemline, increasing the hemline sweep.

3)Pegged (inverted triangle) shape – the skirt tapers inward from hip level to hemline.

4)Bell-shape – the skirt clings to the figure’s curves at, above, or below the hip and breaks into fluid movement along the hemline.

Figure 7.2

Skirts are described by the following terms:

1)The sweep – the width of the skirt at hemline.

2)Movement – the way a skirt’s fullness reacts to the movement of

the body.
