The basic outline of textile-clothing production is fibers, spinning, knitting, finishing, and clothing. The basic outline of the leathercomplementsfootwear chain is tanning, finishing, and manufacturing.

More or less in stages, both cases involve choosing raw materials, deciding how they will be treated, and then producing samples.

Fabrics and accessories are the raw materials of the garments that make up a collection, and as such play an important role in its production. Experts indicate that the cost of raw materials should not exceed 30 percent of the total production of the collection.

Textile ennobling is presented as dyeing, printing, and bleaching.

1)Dyeing - this process involves submerging the textile in a coloring-solution bath mixed with fixers and mordant dyes.

2)Bleaching – the process consists of immersing the fabric in a hot bath with a bleaching solution.

3)Prints – the process of transferring an image onto a fabric.

A good and close relationship between the supplier and the designer is essential. In fact, designers now refer to suppliers as partners because they are partly responsible for a designer's success. In the case of luxury brands, for instance, suppliers are one of the brand's main evaluator, as the two often develop collections consisting of exclusive fabrics together, not only to surprise clients, but also to avoid copies.

5.Answer the following questions

1)Name two main industrial chains.

2)What stages does textile-clothing production have?

3)What are raw materials?

4)What is dyeing?

5)What is bleaching?

6)Why is a good relationship between the supplier and the designer important?

На поверхности изделия не должно быть никаких дефектов, которые ухудшают его внешний вид и качество посадки. Качество посадки оцениваются при статическом положении тела человека по следующим показателям:

73

1)отвесность краев бортов, линий боковых швов и рукавов;

2)горизонтальность положения низа изделия;

3)гладкость поверхности деталей;

А) горизонтальные складки - недостаточная ширина детали в горизонтальном направлении или ее излишняя длины в вертикальном направлении;

Б) вертикальные складки - - недостаточная длина участка детали в вертикальном направлении или ее излишняя длины в горизонтальном направлении;

В) наклонные складки – недостаточные размеры детали в диагональном направлении;

Г) угловые заломы – недостаточная выпуклость или вогнутость детали;

Д) балансовые нарушения – неправильное определение длины деталей;

Stages of production

Collection of samples

The production of samples is the most expensive part of this first stage of production, as well as one that involves a good deal of risk since it is possible that not all of the designs will be received positively.

The process is exhausting, since the market demands at least three collections per season: the main collection, the pre-collection, flash collections, and updates.

Pattern grading

This process is carried out with the aim of acquiring different sizes for single design, covering the entire range of sizes offered by the market in which the collection is to be sold. This is done mainly by rearranging certain stitches of the outline of each of the pieces that make up the basic pattern of the garment

Calculation of costs

Before undertaking the collection of samples, a planning template should be drawn up, with a sales forecast by product classes, in order to keep track of the materials that will be needed and their costs. This template

75

consists of the different technical specifications for each garment, indicating such information as the kind of fabric, length, color, and sizes, which is helpful in the calculation of the consumption of fabrics and other materials as well as the approximate cost over sales forecasts.

From the planning template, two other templates are obtained: one for the collection of samples, with instructions for the production of the sample and its costs, and the production template, with information concerning measurements and materials.

To calculate exact costs it is necessary to know the measurements of the garments, and the number of pieces of each one.

For managing production, one must create an easy system to calculate the value of a collection and all the processes a collection involves. The classic way of estimating costs is to add up all the materials-fabrics, accessories, patterns, and others-and indicate the cost of each process [15].

Production

Finding a good workshop is not easy. It is important to monitor delivery times. Also complicating matters, especially for young designers or emerging brands, is that, like suppliers, workshops require a minimum production volume. It is important to negotiate effectively and to establish clearly, who is responsible for shipping and what the delivery times are. As for the collection, it is necessary to specify all details so that no errors occur during production.

77

Warehouse

In addition to controlling delivery times, it is essential to know where the delivery is to be made. Normally, deliveries are sent to agreed-upon places such as the designer's studio or a business establishment. Since fashion is cyclical, the warehouse will only be full during decisive periods of production, while between seasons it will remain practically empty.

Calendar

Familiarity with the calendar is indispensable in a business. It might seem complicated. Pret-a-porter has a programmed calendar around which the entire industry is structured. Until now, this calendar included two collections per year, the spring-summer and fall-winter collections.
