ACHIEVEMENT TEST ON WORD FORMATION

Образуйте от слов, напечатанных заглавными буквами, однокоренные слова, руководствуясь принципами словообразования, так, чтобы они грамматически и лексически соответствовали содержанию текста.

Future population

1.The United Nations has published its prediction about the size and age of the world’s population three hundred years from now. This report can help environmental (SCIENCE) and policy’makers to understand (DRAMA) changes in the world’s population in the future.

2.The report suggests that if the birth rates stay the same, there’ll be a huge (EXPAND) of the (GLOBE) population.

3.You may think it is (POSSIBLE) but three centuries from now there may be over one hundred trillion people.

4.The repoer says that the world’s population is likely to be (SIGNIFICANT) older. The average age will be fifty.

5.Almost a quarter of all the (INHABIT) of the planet will live in Africa.

6.(RESEARCH) think that India, China and the Unites States will continue to be countries with the (BIG) population.

REVISION TESTS

TEST 1

Exercise 1. State the tense form of the Passive construction.

1.This question can't be answered at once. It should be thoroughly studied.

2.The heating of the solution was followed by a sudden cooling, which resulted in forming of a new product.

3.Oxidation has been defined as the losing of electrons.

4.The same procedure is followed in deriving the formula of a compound containing more than two elements.

5.Gold is slowly attacked by fused nitrates and alkali-metal hydroxides.

6.The method of preparation of oxygen by the decomposition of potassium chlorate was described in chapter 5.

7.Special mention must be made of the extensive research now being conducted in biochemistry.

8.The reactions were followed by titration with a standard base. Methyl Red – Metylene Blue was used as indicator.

Exercise 2. Fill in the gaps with the correct tenses.

1.I (learn) English for three years now.

2.When Stephen (call) yesterday morning, I (write) a paper.

3.When I (come) to work yesterday, I discovered that me teammates (prepare) a surprise for me.

4.As I (want/pass) my exam successfully next year, I study (hard) this term.

Exercise 3. Translate the sentences paying attention to the Passive form of the verbs.

1.Lately much attention has been given to the artificial fibres, which can be produced from oil.

2.All his remarks about this new work have been taken into account and particular consideration is given to the experimental part.

3.The rate of reduction of the amount of oxygen was affected bi the oxidizing conditions.

4.Any neutrons and protons left over after the formation of the maximum number of alpha-particles are looked upon simply as being present in the nucleus.

5.This technique has been followed in our research work and it proved to be very reliable.

Exercise 4. Translate the sentences paying attention to the participles.

1.This behaviour can be understood in the light of the formation reaction in which the electric fields of completed molecules or ions interact with adjacent ions or molecules, thus forming compounds of a higher order.

2.Based on the laws of conservation we can formulate chemical equations with a somewhat greater measure of justification.

3.The data derived are to be found in table 5, they being reliable. It's obvious from the results given above.

4.Surrounding the nucleus were electrons, their number depending upon the atom.

5.Depending on their chemical compositions, solvents are divided into polar and non-polar solvents, and intermediary types, non-polar solvents being organic hydrocarbons.

6.The pressure exerted on the walls of a container by a gas is entirely due to collisions that take place between the moving molecules and the walls.

7.All of the carbonions described are powerful nucleophiles, they being used for the reactions given below.

Exercise 5. Match the beginning of the sentences in column A to their endings in column B and state the type of conditional.

paying attention

to use of the Passive and Infinitive constructions.

1.Nylon is known to have been made in several different firms; the first to be produced commercially was the most important.

2.The order of some reactions is known to have been determined by measuring the time required for a constant fraction of reaction to occur.

3.Since we are to deal very largely with ions in our reactions it is necessary to remember that the solution has to be diluted to a degree that the substance is largely ionized.

4.The absorption of a quantum of visible or ultraviolet radiation could be exacted to alter the state of excitation electronic structure of an atom or a molecule.

5.Reaction appears to be almost instantaneous at room temperature.

6.Urea was long considered to be the first organic compound, it is known first to be produced in the laboratory.
