3. Словотворення та фразеологія

1. Англійські суфікси –ful і –less служать для утворення прикметників від іменників та означають наявність (-ful) чи відсутність (-less) властивості предмету. Наприклад:

Іменник	Прикметник
watch – спостереження life - життя	watchful – спостережливий lifeless – безжиттєвий

Вправа. Постарайтесь зрозуміти значення словосполучень.

a sleepless night; moonless nights; a childless women; a watchful man; a useful device; careful parents.

2. to answer a question – відповісти на питання. Зверніть увагу на відсутність прийменника після дієслова.

Nick’s Letter to Ann

Dear Ann! Thank you a lot for your kind letter. How fine it is to get a letter from you here in Kyiv.

You ask me about our capital. What is it like? It's a difficult question to answer. It’s a very large city in territory as well as in people. There are over three million people in Kiev. There are lots of people everywhere in streets, buses, shops, offices.

As to architecture [a:ki'tektə] I don't quite like the modern style, you know. Though there are lots of fine buildings and blocks of flats here.

The centre of the city is extremely lovely. There are plenty of old streets and by-streets that remain from very old times. The old buildings are sometimes really nice there. You needn't say about Khreshtchatyk street. It's extremely lovely.

There are lots of schools, colleges, and Universities here. Sometimes they write that Kyiv is a city of students. And that’s quite right. There are really very many students here.

There are lots of cinemas, theatres [’əə] and museums [’mju:ziəmz] in Kiev. There are certainly, plenty of shops and stores as well.

In short, there are plenty of places to see and so little time to do it.

IV. Дайте відповіді на питання:

V. Перекладіть на англійську мову:

Ви запитуєте мене про моє місто… Не так легко відповісти на це питання. Наше місто не дуже велике, але це дуже старовинне місто. У ньому дуже багато великих споруд. Щодо архітектури, то я повинен сказати, що є багато чудових будинків. Хоча, звичайно, є багато маленьких старих будинків. У нас є два кінотеатри і, крім того, театр. Коротше кажучи, мені подобається тут жити.
