Today Hermes has a very successful and promising business. It continuous to strive its traditional excellence in fourteen product divisions such as Leather, Scarves, Ties, Menswear, Women fashion, Perfume, Watches, Stationery, Footwear, Gloves, etc. The use of high quality materials and appraised time-consuming handcraftsmanship is well known.

Professional craftsmanship, originated from the creation of meticulous leather saddles, has been spread into every branch of product making. General Hermes sales are made up of around 30% leather goods, 15% clothes, and 12% scarves. Every Hermes leather bound datebook, porcelain teapot, silk waistcoat is made under the company’s watchful eyes.

Whether it is a jacket of meltingly soft leather or a Kelly bag, Hermes purchase will be stylish and appropriate for a lifetime.

Hermes is also highly recognized for its handmade luggage and handbag collections. Hermes does not use assembly lines; only one craftsman may work on one handbag at a time. Due to the labor intensive nature of Hermes production methods and the use of rare materials (sometimes including exotic skins as well as precious metals), one bag can take 18 to 24 hours to create. The construction of any Kelly bag, for example, requires 18 hours of work by a single artisan. Used for all Hermes leathercrafting, the finest leather animal skins reside in the leather storage facility in Paris. Such leathers include those of alligator from Florida, buffalo from Pakistan, crocodile from Australia, shark from Thailand, lizard from Malaysia, and oxen, deer, calf, goat, and ostrich from all over the world. The leathers are professionally treated (dyed in every color, pattern, and texture imaginable) and handcrafted into stylish accessories in the end. When Hermes leather goods require repair, owners can bring the item back to any Hermes store where it can be shipped to the factory in Paris for repair.

Bags made popular through high-profile clientele include the “Kelly Bag” named after Grace Kelly for her many appearances with it (first introduced in the 1930s), and the Constance shoulder bag (with a double strap and large H clasp) and the Trim shoulder bag preferred by Jacqueline Bouvier Onassis. Both Kelly and Constance bags remain in consistent demand and there is generally one year waiting list for these bags.

Another famous handbag, the Birkin, was named for actress Jane Birkin, who co-designed the bag with company president Jean-Louis Dumas after complaining that her Kelly bag was not practical for everyday use. The bag remains the most requested. The wait of a special order Birkin can be up to six years, based on the type of leather or skin requested.

FINDING THE CRIMINAL

The police find most criminals because somebody tells them who the criminals are. They find other criminals by using science and their computers. When there is a bank robbery, the police first look through their computers for the names of bank robbers they know about. Then they go and talk to any of these robbers who are not in gaol.

They ask them where they were at the time of the robbery. If any of these people cannot give a good answer, the police will often use science to find out if one of them is the robber. Many criminals leave something of themselves at the place of the crime, like a fingerprint or a hair. Or they take something away on their shoes or clothes, like dirt or animal hair. If they leave behind some of their blood or a hair or a piece of skin, it will have their DNA inside it.

Everyone's DNA is different in the same way that their fingerprints are different. Therefore, if a criminal cuts himself during a robbery or leaves a hair, or even a small piece of skin, scientists can find out what his DNA is. The police can then ask the person they think is the robber to give them one of his hairs or some blood and see if it has the same DNA. Many criminals are in gaol today because of this kind of evidence.

COMPUTER CRIME

Computers can help many workers. They can also help thieves. There was one thief who worked in a United States bank. He paid for everything he needed by cheque. Then he told the computer not to take any money from his account for the cheques he wrote. The bank's computer did what he said. It gave the shops money for his cheques, but it did not take any money from his bank account. One day the computer broke down. People had to do the computer's work. They soon found out what was happening.

Another thief who worked for a bank saw people filling in deposit forms. Many of these people did not know their account numbers, so they wrote only their names on the forms. They left an empty place for their account numbers. The thief wrote his own account number in this place. When the computer read these forms, it looked only at the account numbers. It did not look at the customers' names. It paid the money on these deposit forms into the thief's account. Then there was the bank worker who told the bank computer to take ten cents off every customer's account each month and put it into his own account. For a long time the bank's customers did not notice that they were losing ten cents every month. But then someone did notice and told the bank. That was the end of that little game!

No one really knows how much computer crime is costing the banks, but some people believe it is millions of dollars a year.

HIJACK!

Some people are afraid of flying. They are worried that the plane will crash or that someone may hijack it. A person who hijacks a plane usually says he will blow up the plane if he does not get money. Sometimes hijackers do not want money, however. They want other things. They sometimes want their friends let out of gaol or to go to another country.

The first hijacking happened on the 16th June 1948 on a plane travelling from Macau to Hong Kong. Some men with guns told the pilot they wanеed money. The pilot fought them but the hijackers shot him. The plane trashed into the sea and nearly everyone in it died. Only one man lived. His name was Wong-yu Man. When the police brought the plane out of the sea, they looked at it very carefully and found bullet holes in the walls of the plane; they knew then that there had been a hijack.

A policeman sat near Wong-yu Man's bed in the hospital. Before long, Wong-yu started to talk in his sleep. 'Where are my men?' he said. 'Are they all right? Did they get the money?' The policeman wrote everything down. He knew Wong-yu's words meant something. He thought Wong-yu was one of the hijackers. He was right. THE CURSE OF THE RING

Rudolph Valentino was a famous film actor in the United States in the 1920s. He acted in silent films. They were called 'silent' because they had no sound.

In 1922, Valentino went to a jeweller's shop to buy a ring. He saw a beautiful silver ring in the shop, but the jeweller did not want to sell it to him.

'It'll bring you bad luck,’ he said. 'It has a curse on it’.

'I don't believe you,’ Valentino replied. 'I don't believe in bad luck.’ He bought the ring and put it on.

In the same year, Valentino made a film called ‘The Young Rajah'. For the first time in his life, he made a film that few people liked. Valentino put the ring away for several years. His next two films did well and Valentino forgot about the curse of the ring. Then, in 1926, he put the ring on again. Suddenly he fell ill, and a few hours later he died.

Valentino left the ring to a friend in his will. As soon as she was given the ring, she fell ill. She gave the ring to a young artist called Russ Colombo, and she immediately got better. However, Mr. Colombo died when his car was in an accident. He had the ring on at the time.

Then a thief stole the ring. A policeman, who had a gun, saw him. The policeman shot the gun into the air to frighten the thief, but he accidentally shot and killed him. By now, many people believed that the ring was dangerous. No one wanted to wear it. The ring was put in a bank. Although the bank had never had a robbery before, just after the ring arrived, thieves robbed the bank twice. In one robbery several people died.

No one knows where the ring is now. No one wants to know!

People as they are

Almost every nation has a reputation of some kind. The French are amorous, gay, fond of champagne; the Germans are dull, formal, efficient; the Americans are boastful, energetic, gregarious and vulgar. The English are cold, reserved, rather haughty people. The English don’t yell in the street, make love in public. They are steady, easy-going and fond of sport and animals.

There are, however certain kinds of behavior, manners and customs which are peculiar to the nation. The English are a nation of stay-at-homes. There is no place like home, they say. «The Englishman’s home is his castle», - is a saying known all over the world; and it is true that English people prefer small houses perhaps with a small garden. The fire is the focus of the English home. What do other nations sit round? The answer is they don’t. They go out to cafes or sit round the cocktail bar. For the English it is the open fire, the toasting fork and the ceremony of English tea.

What’s the difference between an American and a European really? There’s the rhythm of life of course. In Europe there are people who have lived in the same house and been in the job for twenty, thirty, forty years. That’s not the American way of life. They love change, they call it «the spirit of adventure», a spirit that they think is more characteristic of America than of Europe. There is a very interesting remark in a book by an English writer. He wrote: «We in England, and the French, the Germans, the Italians, the Russians, have all got one thing in common – we are descended from the men who stayed behind. In the States they are descended from the folk who moved away». And so they still like to «move away», to change homes and jobs. They seem to be constantly pulling down old and often quite beautiful houses or throwing away things merely because they are old. They have nonne of the Englishman’s sentimental love for things because they are old.

However, any nation has its own peculiarities. The southerner differs from the northerner, the easterner differs from the westerner.
