2.4. Read text 2a. Answer the questions after the text. Text 2a The Place Of Retailers In Production

Retailers are important in the chain of production because they sell goods to the public. Larger retailers usually buy goods in bulk straight from manufacturers. Smaller retailers buy in smaller quantities from wholesalers.

Services given by retailers

There are three main services which are given by all retailers. To sell customers the goods they want; a clother’s shop in a poor area would not stock expensive clothes because they would not sell. To sell the goods when customers want them; many shops stay open late at night because their customers are at work during the day. To sell the goods in the quantities customers want; large and small retailers buy in large quantities and sell in smaller quantities to their customers. This is known as breaking bulk. Retailers can also offer other services to customers, such as delivering to homes, ordering goods not in stock, giving advice, repairing goods, giving credit.

Types of retailer

Small shops can have between one and nine branches. They are often run by families and specialize in a narrow range of goods, e.g. butchers, grocers and greengrocers. Usually they buy their goods from wholesalers and may belong to voluntary chains such as Mace.

Customers shop at small shops because the customers are often known by name and the shop is near people's homes. Also the shop is open at times which suit the customers. Goods can sometimes be paid for at the end of the week. The shop may take orders and deliver to homes. Advice can be given to customers, e.g. help in choosing hi-fi equipment.

Sometimes people do not shop at small shops because prices are high. These shops cannot afford to stock a wide range of goods. Some goods may be of poor quality because they have been on the shelves for a long time.

Small shops have become less important. This has been because shops can now decide for themselves the prices that they charge.

Chain (or multiple) stores have ten or more branches and may be variety stores selling a wide range of goods (e.g. Woolworth, Boots) or may be specialist stores selling a narrow range of goods (e.g. Currys-electrical goods). They are run by Head Offices which make all the important decisions for these chains such as what goods to buy, what prices to charge and what advertising to use. There are branch managers who look after the running of their own branch. Branches are similar, for example all Marks and Spencer shops charge the same prices, stock similar goods and have the same outside appearance. Goods are sold at low prices because they can buy in large quantities from manufacturers.

Customers shop at chain stores because prices low. These stores may sell their own brands which are cheaper e.g. Winfield (Woolworth), St. Michael (Marks and Spencer). Most branches have self-service. Faulty goods can be returned to any branch of the same chain.

Sometimes people do not shop at chain stores because many branches are in towns and it may not be worth travelling into a town if only a few items are needed. It is difficult to get advice when self-service is used. The customer is not known by name.
