23. What are the ten tips to crate career that will light your fire

1. Get to know yourself . Make a list of all the things in your life that you have really enjoyed

2. Brainstorm. Once you have a picture of the things that light your fire, brainstorm ways you could incorporate them into your life.

3. Explore. Once you have identified some things you think you might be interested in, identify people who are knowledgeable in those areas and contact them.

4. Baby steps – look for the steps you can take that will bring your passion into your life and keep you moving towards your long-term goal.

5. Identify your obstacles – what things are getting in your way? Make a list.

6. Create a passion posse. The support of the people around you is an important success factor.

7. Re-examine your definitions of success and failure. What is tor definition of success? Our culture places a lot of emphasis on material accomplishments, status, etc.Try identifying one or two less common ways of identifying “success”- ones that come from heart – and try to move towards them. If you fail in a effort to move toward your passion, it’s not really a failure. Think of it as a step in the right direction.

8. Make a plan. Creating a plan will force you to think things through and add some comfortable structure to something that can seem very up in the air and identified.

9. Act today. Don’t wait, do something right now, what two things can you do right away that will start the ball rolling.

10. Commit to making it happen. Let it out of your brain and into the open. Say, ‘I’m going to do this’. Say it out loud to yourself.

24. How can you note down the difference between vocation, career and job.

Vocation is what you are doing in life that makes a difference for you, that builds meaning for you, that you can look back in your later years to see the impact you have made to the world. Vocation has to do with your calling. A calling is something you have to listen for. You don’t hear it once and then immediately recognize it. You have got to attune yourself to the message.

A career is a line of work. You can say that your career is to be a lawyer or securities analyst – but usually it’s not the same as your calling. You can have different career at different points in your life.

A job is the most specific and immediate of the three terms. It has to do with who’s employing you at the moment and what your job description is for the next six month or so. These days trying to dexcribe what your job will be beyond 12 to 18 month from now is very dicey.

26. What are career decisions based on? How easy is it to combine your interests with your choice of career?

Good career decisions gave to be based not just on your aptitudes, but also on your deep interest. The most common mistake that people make in their career decisions is doing somethibg because they are good at it. The real question is: where are your deep interests? Once you tap your interests, you can express them in any number of ways. You may have a particular aptitude, but without a deep interest in expressing that aptitude, you fail. Once you recognize that those deep interests are the best predictor of job satisfaction, the next step is to get in touch with your interest patterns and connect them with the activities that go on in business. If you look at your deep interests and think about how your interests can be expresses in specific business behaviors, then you will have the elements of a good career decision. (job sculpting)

Common errors in making career decisions

  1. Choose the first or easiest job you can get.

  2. Choose a job based on salary.

  3. Choose a job because it provides a good title.

  4. Take a job just because management offers it.

  5. Choose a job because that's what your parents do.

  6. Choose a job to fulfill your parents unfulfilled dream.

  7. Choose a job just because you have the minimum ability to do it.

Career decisions are usually most sound when based on a number of factors—for example:

  • Interests

  • Personality

  • Skills

  • Values

  • Lifestyle Needs

Here are some steps for you to consider when making value based career decisions.

  1. Know what your values are and prioritise them (what’s important for you to have in a workplace). If your buttons are being pressed then that should tell you something about what you value if you could have a better situation.

  2. Work towards meeting those values every day in your workplace, regardless of others’ behaviour.

  3. Consider how to move toward your preferred career, within your values framework. What is your bigger picture and how can you move toward it?

  4. Take responsibility for your own behaviour at all times
