Merchant wholesalers may be classified generally as full-service wholesalers or limited –service wholesalers, depending on the number of services provided. Full-service wholesalers perfume the entire range of wholesaler functions. General merchandise wholesalers deal in wide product mixes for such items as drugs, cosmetics and tobacco. Limited-line wholesalers stock only a few product lines, in groceries, for example. Specialty-line wholesalers carry a select group of products within a single line. In contrast to full-service wholesalers, limited-service wholesalers assume responsibility for a few wholesale services only. Other marketing tasks are left to the manufacturer or the customer. This category includes cash-and-carry wholesalers, truck wholesalers, rack jobbers, drop shippers and mail-order wholesalers.

Cash and carry wholesalers are middlemen whose customers – usually small retailers and small industrial firms – will pay cash and furnish transport.

Top Managers

Top managers are the small group of upper-level executives who guide and control the overall fortunes of the organization. In terms of planning, top managers are generally responsible for interpreting the organization's purpose and developing its mission. They also determine the firm's strategy and define its major policies. It takes years of hard work and determination, as well as talent and no small share of good luck, to reach the ranks of top management in large companies. Common titles associated with top managers are president, vice president, chief executive officer (CEO), and chief operating officer (COO).

Middle Managers

Middle managers are those managers who implement the strategy and major policies that are handed down from the top level of the organization. They develop tactical plans and standard operating procedures, and they coordinate and supervise the activities of lower-level managers. Titles at the middle management level include division manager, department head, plant manager, and operations manager.
