I. Информативное чтение.
1. Read the headline of the text. What is this text about?
2. Find modal verbs and translate sentences containing them.
3. What other verbs from the text express modality?
4. Read the text and answer the following questions:
1) What is differential diagnosis?
2) What depends on diagnosis?
3) How does a doctor make a diagnosis?
4) What methods help the doctor to make a diagnosis?
Diagnosis:
the doctor’s best judgment of what is specifically wrong with a patient. This is the heart of the art of medicine. Differential diagnosis is the effort to determine exactly which of several possible diseases is afflicting a patient. Diagnosis is the doctor’s job; self-diagnosis should be strictly avoided. Treatment depends on diagnosis.
A doctor makes a diagnosis by hearing and evaluating a patient’s history, making a physical examination (which cannot be done over the telephone or by mail!), observing a sequence of symptoms and signs of disease, and interpreting the findings of laboratory tests and examinations. Many laboratory tests – examinations of blood and urine, for example – aid in diagnosis, but the doctor, not the test, makes the diagnosis.
Many patients are mystified by the tools and methods of modern medical diagnosis, especially when they are sent to hospital or clinic for a complete check-up. In effect, all diagnostic instruments simply extend the range of the five senses, by means of which physicians have from time immemorial examined their patients. X-ray pictures enable the doctor to see what is going on (and has happened) inside the body. “Scopes” of various sorts, such as the cystoscope or ophthalmoscope, also extend the range of sight. The ophthalmoscope permits the doctor to see into the interior of the eyeball, the cystoscope into the bladder. The stethoscope magnifies the sounds of the heart. The electrocardiograph records the electrical reactions of the heart; the electroencephalograph detects even fainter electrical phenomena in the brain.
Because of the complexity of disease processes, a doctor cannot always make a positive diagnosis. Even a specialist called in consultation may have to make a tentative diagnosis and await future developments to confirm or change his judgment.
