У III ос. після -ss, -sh, -ch, -tch, -x, -o + -es: tells; goes, does [gouz; dΛz] (після дзвінких, голосних[z]); works, wants (після глухих[s]); kisses, washes, mixes, teaches, matches (після шиплячих[iz]).

-пригол. + Y + -S -IES: fly — flies. -голосн. + Y + -S → -YS: plays, says [sæz].

Якщо присудок є складним, одна частина якого виражена модальним дієсл. (may, can, must), закінчення –S не вживається: She must do it. He may come in.

E.g.: He always comes, I am always late.
