TITANIUM

Only recently has titanium joined the list of commer­cially useful metals and emerged from the truly rare-metal state.

Titanium is the ninth ranking element in abundance in the earth's crust. It is exceeded by oxygen, silicon, alu­minium, iron, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Practi­cally all crystalline rocks, sand, clay and other soils con­tain titanium. Of the many minerals containing titanium, only two are of prime commercial importance: ilmenite, a combined titanium-iron oxide, and rutile. Ilmenite is of particular importance since it frequently occurs as mass­ive ore deposits where little or no concentration is needed.

The reactivity of titanium at high temperatures has made its extraction from ores particularly difficult. By car­bon reduction in an electric-arc furnace the oxide can be at least partially reduced, but the resultant product is a brittle carbide, or, if done in air, a carbo-nitride, or a crude metal so contaminated with carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen as to be useless structurally. This ease of reaction at high temperatures is exemplified by the difficulty in handling molten titanium, since it reacts with every known refractory so as to produce serious contamination. Special methods, consequently, have had to be devised to produce the rel­atively pure metal and to melt and cast it.

The most promising properties of titanium are its low density, good strength, ease in fabrication, and excellent corrosion resistance. These properties, particularly strength and ease in fabrication, depend to a great extent on the purity of the metal. In general, the higher the purity of titanium, the easier it is to fabricate, but the lower is its strength. Also, titanium is a good base for alloying addi­tions. Almost all of the metallic elements are soluble in solid titanium, thus improving the strength of titanium by solid-solution hardening.

The most important chemical property of titanium is its excellent corrosion resistance under many conditions. As with stainless steel and aluminium this can be attrib­uted largely to the formation of a passive-oxide surface film. It is because of this film that titanium is resistant to attack in most oxidizing media.

The potential applications of titanium and its alloys are innumerable. Its basic properties of high strength, low den­sity, and excellent corrosion resistance are ideal for count­less uses where other metals are now being used.
