4. Types of Markets (cm9)
The term market, as used by economists is an extension of the ancient idea of a market as a place where people gather to buy and sell goods. In former days part of a town was kept as the market or marketplace, and people would travel many kilometers on special market-days in order to buy and sell various commodities. Today, however, markets such as the world sugar market, the gold market and the cotton market do not need to have fixed geographical location. Such a market is simply a set of conditions permitting buyers and sellers to work together. Whenever people who are willing to sell a commodity contact people who are willing to buy it, a market for that commodity created. Buyer and sellers may meet in persons, or they may communicate in some other way: by letter, by telephone or through their agents. In analyzing the situation, you find the both the consumer and the industrial markets for stationary are large and diverse, composed of many market segments - groups of individuals or organizations within a market that share certain common characteristics. To avoid spreading your resources too thin, you decide to focus on target markets - specific groups of customers to whom a company wants to sell a particular product. You want to learn what kind of office supplies they are currently buying and why, what these customers might went in the future, and how your company could satisfy their needs. You also want to know what your competitors have to offer this target group and how you can achieve a competitive advantage. This type of research will help you make better decisions about. What items to stock in your store and how to promote and price them. For a group of people to be a market, the members of the group must meet the following four requirements: 1. They must need or want a perticular product or service. 2. They must have the ability to purchase the product. Ability to purchase is related to buying power, which consists of resources such as money, goods and services that can be traded in an exchange situation. 3. They must be willing to use their buying power. 4. They must have the authority to buy the specific products.
