2. Пассивные конструкции

• Прочитайте теорию о страдательных конструкциях (Я.И. Рецкер «Учебное пособие по переводу с английского языка на русский», Выпуск 1. – М.: Высшая школа, 1981, стр.26-29):

Страдательный залог используется в английском языке значительно шире, чем в русском. В последнем пассивная форма носит, в сравнении с безличной, более официальный и скорее письменный, чем разговорный характер, а потому менее употребительна.

Перевод пассивных конструкций. Перевод предложений с глаголом-сказуемым в страдательном залоге часто требует изменения конструкции, так как в английском языке пассивные конструкции могут употребляться иначе, чем в русском. Прежде всего, в английском языке пассивную конструкцию можно образовать на основе не только прямо-переходных, но и косвенно-переходных глаголов, а также глаголов с предложными дополнениями. Это создает возможность более широкого употребления пассивных конструкций в английском языке, чем в русском.

Наиболее удобная возможность сохранения пассивной конструкции в переводе наблюдается при наличии соответствующего английскому русского глагола, употребляемого в страдательном залоге.

A picketing coal miner who threw a piece of mortar at a lorry loaded with coal was fined £ 10. (Morning Star)

Шахтер-пикетчик, швырнувший кусок известки в груженный углем грузовик, был оштрафован на 10 фунтов стерлингов.

The banning of taxi tips and the increasing of fares by equivalent amounts is to be suggested in the Commons tomorrow. (Morning Star)

Завтра в палате общин будет внесено предложение о запрещении взимать чаевые с пассажиров такси и о соответствующем увеличении проездной платы.

Хотя и здесь возможно было бы ограничиться одним глаголом будет предложено запретить, но гораздо привычней в стилистическом отношении форма будет внесено предложение. Аналогичный пример можно привести из той же газеты:

Low-interest loans to local authorities for house building are urged in a resolution to the Minister of Housing by Erpingham Rural District Council.

В резолюции, принятой муниципалитетом Эрпингемского сельскохозяйст­венного района и адресованной министру жилищного строительства, содер­жится требование о предоставлении местным властям льготных займов на жилищное строительство.

При анализе двух последних примеров следует обратить внимание на то, что в перевод включены дополнительные слова, отсутствующие в подлиннике.

При выборе конструкции русского предложения в переводе важно знать, какими причинами вызывается употребление страдательного залога в английском. Таких причин в основном четыре:

1) указать производителя действия невозможно или нежелательно;

2) логическое ударение поставлено па объекте, а не на субъекте действия;

3) английское предложение имеет так называемую «централизованную» структуру, т. е. два или более сказуемых, отнесенных к одному подлежащему;

4) страдательный залог в однородных членах предложения.

Первая причина является наиболее распространенной. В большинстве случаев такие предложения переводятся русскими безличными или неопределенно-личными предложениями.

Such stale of things cannot bе put up with. С таким положением дел нельзя мириться.

People are judged by their actions. О людях надо судить по их поступкам.

What can't be cured must be endured. С тем, что непоправимо, приходится мириться.

But violence and the attempts to stop the progressive movement have only a temporary effect on history. Men are murdered, tears are shed, people are confused, but in America and elsewhere the great underlying movement of the people for equality and democracy is by now too great to be halted. (Daily Worker) Однако ни насилие, ни попытки остановить прогрессивное движение не могут иметь длительного влияния на ход исторического развития. Можно уничтожить людей, можно заставить других проливать потоки слез, но ничто не может остановить великое и несокрушимое движение народов к равенству и демократии.

Здесь в подлиннике «деятель», т. е. тот, кто совершает насилие и заставляет проливать слезы, не указан. Поэтому в переводе неизбежно безличное предложение.

Вторая причина — логическое ударение, поставленное на объекте, а не на субъекте действия.

Plea for Polaris Protest Support. - Full support for the demonstration on February 25 opposing the launching of Britain's second nuclear Polaris submarine has been urged by the British Peace Committee. The launching ceremony is to be performed by Mrs Denis Healy, wife of the Defence Minister, at Birkenhead. The demonstration is being organised by the North-West Region of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. (Morning Star)

В приведенной выше заметке все три предложения имеют названный субъект действия. Во всех трех случаях логическое ударение поставлено на объекте, и все три глагола-сказуемых даны в страдательном залоге: full support... has been urged, the launching ceremony... is to be performed, the demonstration is being organized.

При переводе нужно помнить, что в русском языке логическое ударение может быть усилено более гибким порядком слов, позволяющим выдвинуть прямое или косвенное дополнение на первое место в предложении.

К полной поддержке демонстрации 25 февраля против спуска на воду второй английской атомной подводной лодки, оснащенной ракетами «Поларис», призывает Британский комитет защиты мира. Церемонию спуска откроет миссис Хили, супруга министра обороны Дениса Хили. Демонстрацию протеста организует Северо-западное отделение Кампании за ядерное разоружение.

Логическое ударение, поставленное на трех дополнениях в этих трех предложениях, не только выделяет центр суждения в них, но и вполне соответствует логическому ходу мысли. Ведь каждое последующее предложение начинается с «данного», т. е. уже упомянутого в предыдущем предложении (церемония спуска, демонстрация протеста), и заканчивается «новым» элементом высказывания.

Третья причина предпочтения страдательного залога в английском языке — его использование в конструкциях с единым подлежащим. В таких предложениях при одном подлежащем может быть несколько сказуемых, причем эти глаголы-сказуемые могут быть и в действительном и в страдательном залоге. Русскому языку чуждо такое построение предложения, что необходимо учитывать при переводе. Например:

Senator John Quincy neither sought nor was offered political alliances or influence. (J. F. Kennedy)

Сенатор Джон Куинси не домогался влияния и не искал политических союзников, да и другие не стремились к союзу с ним.

Употребление глаголов в пассиве при наличии однородных членов может быть подсказано также невозможностью или нежеланием указать производителей действий, что отражается и на переводе.

The Government's clear and aboveboard proposals have been opposed, attacked and derided, though no reasonable objections have been offered to substitute them. (The Sunday Times)

Ясные и откровенные предложения правительства были встречены нападками, насмешками и получили отпор, хотя не было выдвинуто никаких разумных контрпредложений.

Значительно труднее было бы перевести это предложение без замены глаголов существительным, т. е. без грамматических трансформаций.

Как и любые другие грамматические формы и лексические единицы, пассивные конструкции также подчиняются зависимости от контекста при переводе.

• Переведите на русский язык и укажите, при переводе каких предложений невозможно употребление страдательного залога.

1. Then the maid was awakened and the doctor sent for.

2. I can be rung up if there is any change.

3. Pringle's stockings were splashed by a passing taxi.

4. He was asked abruptly whether he thought he would like it at Cobb.

5. He was regarded by all his friends as amiable, loyal, tough-natured, but rather cold.

6. It was done on purpose.

7. Zena's prayer is answered.

8. Anyone who puts furniture before cats and children shouldn't be allowed to have either.

9. Tom, who called for his typescript next day, was congratulated cordially by Matthew.

10. The baggage is taken care of.

11. They were denied admittance.

12. The boy was always made fun of at school.

13. The house had not been lived in too long.

14. I was told to wait in the lounge.

15. The report was followed by a long debate.

16. Such things can't be put up with.

17. She had been asked to join them but had refused.

18. What Mildred was trying to conjure up must be made nonsense of, must be made somehow not to exist. The thing must be laughed off briskly, Mildred must be clapped on the shoulder and taken to her coffee.

19. His December statement was given support by the President.

20. She wasn't given an answer but was told she would have to register anyway.

21. I was not taken seriously at first.

22. Later she was offered a post in the legal department of the republican government.

• Переведите на русский язык следующие предложения:

1. Waterloo was lost by Napoleon, who was outwitted and outfought by Wellington and Blücher (the two generals who weren’t afraid of his reputation); it was not a fault of Grouchy.

2. If the recommendations of the Wolfenden Committee on Sports are accepted and acted upon by the Government, they would mark a big step in the right direction.

3. Roosevelt's famous statement that one third of the nation was ill-fed, ill-clothed and ill-housed should have read at least two-thirds, for no less than 80 per cent of our people are getting less than is called for in the widely endorsed budget of the Heller Committee for research in social economics.

4. Workers of the colonial countries have been and are ruthlessly exploited and persecuted. In the Philippines all democratic trade unions have been banned.
