Тема II: Передача информации, содержащейся в эквивалентных грамматических формах и конструкциях двух языков, несовпадающих в значении и/или употреблении

1. Несовпадение категории числа

• Ознакомьтесь с теорией перевода при несовпадении категории числа в английском и русском языках (Т.Р. Левицкая, А. М. Фитерман «Пособие по переводу с английского языка на русский». – М.: Высшая школа, 1973, стр.43-44).

Категория числа существительных имеется и в английском и в русском языках. Однако в употреблении существительных в единственном и множественном числе наблюдаются довольно значительные расхождения как в отношении исчисляемых, так и неисчисляемых существительных.

Исчисляемые существительные имеют формы единственного и множественного числа в обоих языках, которые обычно совпадают, тем не менее, в ряде случаев их употребление бывает различно. Так, например, в английском языке существительные, обозначающие части тела, иногда употребляются в единственном числе для большей выразительности. Такое употребление вызвано стилистическими соображениями. Например: her cheek blanched. Глагол to blanch выражает большую интенсивность заключенного в нем понятия по сравнению с глаголом to ра1е; кроме того, он имеет известную стилистическую окраску, являясь словом высоколитературным. В приведенном выше примере наблюдается некоторое стилистическое соответствие: глагол to blanch, более выразительный, чем to ра1е. как бы требует употребления существительного cheek в единственном числе, что является менее обычным. И наоборот, существительное cheek, употребленное в единственном числе, требует выбора соответствующего глагола. Такое явление можно было бы назвать стилистическим согласованием. Конечно, сохранение единственного числа в переводе невозможно, ибо это нарушило бы нормы русского языка, но выразительность такого употребления следует сохранить. Этого можно достигнуть выбором глагола и введением дополнительных слов, а также заменой самого существительного — ее лицо побелело, стало белым, как полотно, покрылось мертвенной бледностью и т. п. в зависимости от контекста.

Однако в единственном числе употребляются и другие существительные, и такое употребление встречается не только в художественной литературе. Например:

War Atrocity on Peace Conference Eve (газетный заголовок)

Зверства (интервентов) накануне мирной конференции.

Что касается неисчисляемых существительных, то здесь имеется много различных случаев несовпадения. С одной стороны, такие существительные имеют только одну форму единственного или множественного числа, и эти формы иногда не совпадают в английском и русском языках. Сравните: ink и чернила, топеу и деньги, tidings и новость (новости), известие (известия).

Что же касается существительных, выражающих абстрактные понятия, то здесь количество несовпадений больше. Такие существительные в английском языке нередко употребляются во множественном числе, что совершенно невозможно в русском. Например: initiatives, struggles и т. п. Обычно в переводе употребляется русское существительное в единственном числе в соответствии с нормами русского языка, например:

Peaceful initiatives of the Soviet Union.

Мирная инициатива Советского Союза.

Но иногда совершенно необходимо сохранить множественное число в переводе, ибо оно является значимым, важным по смыслу. Например, для перевода предложения Strikes broke out in many British industries приходится вводить дополнительное исчисляемое существительное: Забастовки вспыхнули в ряде отраслей промышленности Англии.

К этому способу перевода (введение дополнительного слова) необходимо прибегать, когда английское существительное является исчисляемым, то есть имеет множественное число, а русское существительное его не имеет и является неисчисляемым.

• Переведите на русский язык следующие предложения:

1. Our collective farm has gathered a rich harvest of fruit this year.

2. Hard though it is to pass liberal legislation in the face of today’s Congressional opposition, even this is easier than finding the money and the techniques to see that the laws are effective.

3. Private initiative must carry a larger share of responsibility, but in combination with more intelligent, imaginative and flexible government policies that tie social services to incentives for self-help.

4. My watch was four minutes slow and I took it to a watch-maker.

5. I came forward to the head of the stairs and stood there, smiling, my hat in my hand, like the girl in the picture. I waited for the clapping and the laughter that would follow as I walked slowly down the stairs. Nobody clapped, nobody moved.

6. “Can you not give me that information here?” I demanded.

7. The House of Representatives passed an amendment in November which bars any poor person from aid if they take part in protests, pickets, or “similar group activities.”
