To express a real possibility in the present and in the future, use First Conditional.

If-clause: Present Simple

Main clause: Future Simple

If the weather is good on Saturday, we will go on a picnic.

It is a real possibility in the future.

To express an imaginary situation in the present, use Second Conditional.

If-clause: Past Simple

Main clause: would+inf.

If the weather was/were good today, we would go for a walk in the park.

But the weather is not good, so going for a walk is unreal.

To speculate about how it could have been different (a hypothetical possibility in the past), use Third Conditional.

If-clause: Past Perfect

Main clause: would+have+Past Participle

If the weather had been good last Sunday, we would have gone on a picnic.

But the weather was bad, so we didn’t go.
