1. A personal pronoun in the objective case or a noun

2. Infinitive.

A noun/pronoun expresses the person who performs the action expressed by Infinitive.

Examples. I know him to be a very good pupil.

I don’t want you to come home late.

The construction is used:

  • after the verbs of physical perception see, watch, hear, feel, notice, etc.

  • after the verbs expressing mental activity think, know, expect, understand, believe, etc.

  • after the verbs expressing feelings like, love, hate, etc.

  • after the verbs expressing wish want, wish, etc.

  • after the verbs expressing order tell, ask, get(заставлять), make, let, have(заставлять).

Infinitive goes without particle to after the verbs of physical perception, the verbs make, let, have(заставлять)in the Active Voice and the expressions You’d better, I’d rather and Why not … ?

Examples. We watched the sun rise.

I’d rather stay at home and watch TV..

Why not go and see her tonight?

The sentences with Complex Object are translated into Russian by a similar construction or by a subordinate clause with the conjunction что.

Examples. That made the girl smile.Это заставило девушку улыбнуться.

We expect them to arrive tomorrow.Мы ожидаем, что они

приедут завтра.

I. Give all the missing forms of the infinitives.

to be cut to have made to have been to hurry to have moved

to be looking for to choose to have tried on to have been told

II. Translate the sentences into Russian paying attention to the forms of

Infinitive.

  1. The old man expected me to accept his own values.

  2. Some TV programmes devoted to children make them act aggressively.

  3. Mother doesn’t allow me to keep late hours.

  4. She didn’t miss a chance to show her good nature. She wanted to be

liked and praised.

  1. He came back from work very late at night, he may still be sleeping.

  2. I had a headache in the morning and my friend made me take a pill.

  3. He was very happy to have won the competition.

  4. It was very unpleasant to be waiting for you here for ages!

III. Use the right form of the infinitives in brackets.

  1. He hated (to hurry) to work every morning.

  2. We seem (to fly) over the sea for a long time and there is yet no land.

  3. Good-bye. So pleased (to meet) you.

  4. I know him (to be) an actor once.

  5. The dress was ridiculous and she was sure (to laugh) at if she wore it.

  6. There are a lot of things (to take) into consideration in the modern

world.

  1. I am sorry (to give) you so much trouble.

  2. She didn’t want (to be) late for the meeting.

IV. Complete the sentences using Infinitive as

a) subject
