AEG Transportation Systems and Andrew Corp’s communications group are to develop a radio automatic train control system, Flexiblok, over the next two years. The aim is to decrease headways, and eventually replace track circuits; initially it will overlay existing signalling.

One problem facing engineers is the rising level of electronic noise, generated by computer-based systems; this will be overcome by using Spread Spectrum Radio transmission.

Значение радиосвязи в тоннелях на железной дороге постоянно возрастает. Для её обеспечения можно применять антенны или кабели с утечкой (излучающие кабели). В длинных тоннелях необходим значительный объём оборудования, требующего большой точности проектирования. Отделения широкополосной связи фирмы Robert Bosch и фирмы Ascom Radiocom обладают в этой области большим опытом и с июля 1994 действуют совместно, предлагая оптимальные решения для любого варианта применения систем радиосвязи в тоннелях.

Eurotunnel Drops Claims

Channel Tunnel Operator, Eurotunnel has dropped most of its leggal claims against the British and French goverments in return for a 10 year extention to its 55 year concession. It will now operate the Tunnel up to July 2052.

The agreement is meant to compensate Euro-tunnel for claims of up to £1 billion, based upon cost overruns which it blames on extra safety, security and environmental measures imposed by the intergovernmental Commission (IGC) and the two governments. It will clear the way for Eurotunnel to complete negotiations with its bankers over additionnal funding to cover start-up costs.

Eurotunnel estimated that it needs to raise another £1 billion, mainly for debt servicing before it expects to move into profit in 1998. It plans to raise half this amount from a shares issue within the next three months, with the remainder being financed by the banks. This would bring the final cost of constructing the Channel Tunnel to £10 billion.

The expected concession is subject to the final £1 billion being raised by Eurotunnel which starts freight shuttle operations on March 7, followed by the beginning of through-railfreight services operated by the national railways on March 14. Shuttle passenger services are scheduled to start on May 8, but Eurostar passenger through-services are not likely to be fully underway before August.
