Altai is usually called the Siberian granary, because it is one of the major agricultural producers in Russia. The territory ranks one of the first in Russia in the output of cheese and butter.

Altai is very attractive for tourists from all over the country and abroad. The territory has old and stable cultural traditions. The representatives of more than 110 nationalities coexist here. Altai history has a number of glorious names. Ivan Polzunov constructed the first heatengine in the world. The whole country knows the name of the soldier A. Matrosov, painter N. Rerikh, writer and film director V. Shukshin. The Altai village Polkovnikovo is the birthplace of Cosmonaut II German Titov.

TEXT II. CULTURAL LIFE OF BARNAUL

Altai culture has rich and old traditions. For almost three centuries Barnaul has been one of the major cultural centers of Siberia. There are different opportunities for study in Barnaul. Six state higher educational establishments train students in various specialties.

Our city is rich in cultural facilities. It has four theatres, a Philharmonic Society, a number of museums, art schools and libraries.

The theatrical traditions are continued by the Shukshin Drama

Theatre, the Theatre of Musical Comedy, the Children‘s and Puppet

Theatres, as well as the Little Musical Theatre. The Shukshin Drama Theatre offers a wide mixture of plays: new works, modern classics, contemporary foreign plays and experimental drama. The Theatre of Musical Comedy presents mainly musicals.

The local Philharmonic Society offers diverse cultural programs. The lovers of classical music can enjoy a Symphony Orchestra and an organ. Prominent men of art of Russia and other countries frequent the Philharmonic Society.

The orchestra of Russian folk instruments ―Siberia‖ regularly takes part in different folklore festivals. It has already won the hearts of the public.

Barnaul is famous for the oldest Museum of Regional Studies in Siberia. The museum tells about the history and nature of Altai Territory.

Pop music stars usually meet their fans at the Palace of Sport. Its accommodation capacity is about 6000 people. There is a Sport Complex ―Ob‖, cinemas, swimming pools, stadiums and a hippodrome in the city.

The cultural life of Barnaul has become more active among children and youth. Gifted young men often participate in All-Russian and international competitions. They tour much around Russia and abroad.

To support such children, the city has formed a special fund ―Young Musicians of Barnaul‖, which offers grants.

There are ten musical and art schools in Barnaul. As for the whole region there are 7 theatres, 27 museums, 120 art schools and 5 musical schools.

The Academy of Culture contributes much to the spiritual education of the youth. The same aim is pursued by the creative activity of writers, painters and architects. Barnaul has some cultural centers like German and Cossack cultural centers.

Many people from Altai are famous all over Russia: the famous founder of the fine arts in Altai G. Gurkin, the famous actors A. Pan- kratov-Cherny, M. Evdokimov, V. Zolotychin, N. Ysatova, the famous film director Evgeny Bedarev. The name of the writer, film director and

actor Vassily Shukshin takes an important part in the cultural life of Altai. Annual Shukshin Readings are held in his native Srostki.
