TEXT I. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

Most libraries have tons of books, but what is the world‘s largest library? The Library of Congress, of course! It‘s the largest library in the world in both shelf space and number of books.

143

The history of Library of Congress is the history of creation of American national library. It was established in 1800 to contain "such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress‖. It is known that the world is ruled by those who own the information, so the library began to collect materials on the history of world legislation and served the Parliament. The library gradually became the symbol of American informational power.

Now the collections of the Library of Congress include more than 32 million cataloged books and other print materials in 470 languages; more than 61 million manuscripts; the largest rare book collection in North America, including the Gutenberg Bible (one of the most valuable books in the world); 5 million maps; 6 million works of sheet music; 3 million sound recordings; more than 14.7 million prints and photographic images including fine and popular art pieces and architectural drawings. All these collections fill about 838 miles (1,349 km) of bookshelves, that is more than the distance from Moscow to Petersburg.

The Library of Congress is open to the public. One million customers a year visit the Library. Four thousand people are employed in it. The library has 22 reading halls and it can house 1500 readers at a time. The library makes millions of digital objects, comprising tens of petabytes. Users of the library‘s site can find all the information, including lists of catalogues, digital collections and online tours.

Despite the fact that the library is open to the public, very few people are allowed to check out books. These privileged people are library employees, members of Congress, Supreme Court justices and other government officials.

The Library of Congress has the largest Russian collection outside Russia. In 1906 the library purchased the private collection of books which belonged to Siberian merchant Gennady Yudin. The collection included about 100.000 copies. The original handwritten inventory can be found in the Rare Book Division and is also available on microfilm. The gem of the collection is the photos of Old Russia dated to 1908, made by a Tsar‘s photographer.

In 2005 the Library started to collaborate with institutions around the globe to develop the World Digital Library, which digitally preserves books and other cultural objects. In 2010 the Library of Congress announced plans to archive all public communication on Twitter

144

since 2006. The Twitter archive is the Library's intention to preserve first-person accounts in history.
