3.2.2. PARENTING AND PERSONAL EDUCATION
(A) Problems with your teenage children? Why not throw them out?
(B) Do you have rude and moody teenage children living in your
house? Have you ever secretly wanted to
throw them out? A Spanish
couple, Mr. and Mrs. Serrano from Zaragoza in Spain, have done exactly that.
(C) Maria and her husband Mariano lived with their two sons, David, 20 and Mariano, 18. «The situation was impossible,” said Maria. “We were always like a hotel, and they weren’t studying or looking for work. They were
arguing, our children were treating our house
contributing anything. Also, they weren’t
complaining all the time and insulting us. They didn’t respect us. I love my children, but in the end
it was ruining our lives.”
(D) So Maria and Mariano asked their sons to leave the family home in Zaragoza in Spain. However, the two boys didn’t want to go. Then, Mr. and Mrs. Serrano took an unusual decision – they went to court.
(E) Normally, under Spanish law parents do not have the right to make their children leave home. But in this case the judge decided that the situation in the Serrano family was “
intolerable”. He gave Mr. and
Mrs. Serrano the right to tell their children to go.
(F) What did the Serrano’s boys do? In fact, they didn’t go very far from home. The oldest boy, David, went to live with his girlfriend and has just started work in her father’s construction company. The youngest son has rented a fl at near the family home (his mother paid the fi rst month rent only).

3.2.3. SPORT
(A) A QUESTION OF TALENT? «All you’ll need is about 10,000 hours!»
(B) If we want to learn something physical, then it pays to wait until the afternoon. Between 2 pm and 6 pm our
muscle strength is at
its peak and our hand-eye
coordination is very effi cient. This means the
afternoon is probably better for learning new sports or perhaps a new dance step.

(C) We’ve all had the experience of trying to learn something new only to fi nd out that we’re not very good at it. We look around at other people we’re learning with and they seem so much more talented and are doing so much better. It seems to come naturally to them. And when you look at all the people who are
outstanding at
what they do – the really famous people who are superstars – all you see is
natural ability.
(D) The conclusion seems obvious: talented people must be born
that way.
Without a doubt, there are people who are brilliant at certain things – they have a talent for kicking a football around a fi eld, or they pick up a violin and immediately make music. However, there’s also a lot to be said for
practice. Psychologist K. Anders Ericsson studied
students at Berlin’s Academy of Music. He found that even though all the musicians in the study had the
potential to become world famous,
only some of them actually did. What made the difference? The answer is simple: time. Those who became
exceptional were more competitive and practised about two thousand hours more than those
who only did well.
(E) So, according to Ericsson, that’s what it takes to become really
skilled.
It turns out that practice really does make perfect, and in order to learn something and become very successful at doing it, all you’ll need is about 10,000 hours!
(F) Athlete Barbara MacCallum is a professional runner and trainer. He said that
genes are important because we all know that
many Kenyans are tall and thin and so on. There really are lots of very good runners in Kenya. But it’s not just about having long legs. They also have a culture of running, everyone runs, even small children, so they have this background, they all see themselves as runners, as good runners.
(G) So, it is partly like having lots of practice, lots of
yourself
, and also learning to run in the right way.
genetic, but it’s also to do with lots of other factors,
encouragement to run, believing in

(B) But now a worldwide movement, whose aim
is to slow life down, has started a
counter-revolution.
Its supporters are people who believe that a happier and healthier way of life is possible…
(C) The Slow Food movement was founded the day that an Italian journalist, Carlo Petrini, saw that McDonald’s had opened a restaurant in Piazza di Spagna, the beautiful square in Rome.
(D) He thought it was tragic that many people today live too quickly to sit down for a proper meal and only eat
mass-produced fast
food. He decided that he had to try to do something about it and so he started the Slow Food movement. Although he didn’t succeed in
banning
McDonald’s from Piazza di Spagna, Slow Food has become a global organization and now has more than 80,000 members in 100 countries.
(E) “We believe,” says Fiona Richmond of Slow Food UK, “that
people should take time to enjoy food.”
(F) Slow Food also
encourages people to eat local and regional
food, to use
local shops and markets, to eat out in small family restaurants,
and to cook with traditional recipes.
(G) Says Richmond, “There is nothing more satisfying than relaxing around a lively table in the company of family and friends. The
pleasure of eating quality food should be celebrated.”
