Houses, stores, streets, parks, museums, etc. – all this should fulfill two main functions, aesthetic (to have a well-thought-out composition, to comply with the principles of harmony) and ergonomic (to be convenient to use). The design of the environment depends on the purpose of the object. So, the office should set a person to work, and the interior of the bar, on the contrary, to promote relaxation and informal communication.
Usually environmental designers specialize in one direction. Interior work requires an understanding of materials and architectural planning principles, while landscape projects require knowledge of agronomy, surveying and plant science. Although the profession of an environmental designer is creative, it requires great responsibility – uncomfortable stands can spoil the impression of customers from the store, and wrong colour combinations in the museum – affect the success of the exhibition.
75
The main directions of environmental design:
– Design of retail spaces. Work with stores, coffee houses, restaurants, shopping centers. This direction of environmental design is closely connected with marketing and branding, as the shopping space should correspond to the brand concept and contain elements of identity.
– Landscape design. Improvement of parks, boulevards, garden plots. Includes garden and park construction, landscape design, landscaping, etc.
– Interior design. Design of private and public premises. The designer chooses the colour scheme, selects materials and furniture, zoned rooms, makes an estimate. This direction can overlap with both the design of retail spaces and landscaping.
– Subject-material design. Development of design concepts of objects surrounding us – from stationery to cars, from dishes to computers. To work in this direction, you need to know modelling programmes, and the peculiarities of production, understand the styles and trends of object design.
– Exhibition design. Designing expositions – concept development, room design, creation of graphic materials, information signs and pointers.
Regardless of which direction you choose, you will need to know the basics of composition, understanding of colour and shape, knowledge of graphic editors, ability to prepare project documentation. Environ “to surround”. – Fr. environner, to surround, fr. environ, round about, a going round, circuit, fr. virer, to turn
round. Environment (n), surroundings. – Formed from environ with suffix. -ment; Comes from Old French environer to surround,
77
enclose, encircle, from environ round about, from en- in + viron a circle, circuit, also used as an adverb, from virer to turn).
-ment, common suffix of Latin origin forming nouns, originally from French and representing Latin -mentum, which was added to verb stems to make nouns indicating the result or product of the action of the verb or the means or instrument of the action. In Vulgar Latin and Old French it came to be used as a formative in nouns of action. French inserts an -e- between the verbal root and the suffix (as in commencement from commencer; with verbs in ir, -i- is inserted instead.
Used with English verb stems from 16 c. (for example amazement, betterment, merriment, the last of which also illustrates the habit of turning -y to -i- before this suffix).
The stems to which -ment is normally appended are those of verbs; freaks like oddment & funniment should not be made a precedent of; they are themselves due to misconception of merriment, which is not from the adjective, but from an obsolete verb merry to rejoice.
