Ex. 9. Define infinitive constructions in the following sentences.
1. We know heat to be a form of energy, but there was a time when it was supposed to be a kind of substance which was believed to flow from a hotter body to a colder one. 2. Scientists assume the atomic weight of carbon to be integral. 3. When sound waves are directed on the diaphragm they cause it to move backwards and forwards. 4. In the electromagnetic theory of radiation the atom is supposed to be similar to the antenna of a radio transmitter, although much smaller and radiating a much higher frequency. 5. Ex. 1. Combine the following sentences using Participle I according to the model:

Ex. 2. Combine the following sentences according to the model.

They must be made to feel that the method being utilized is really in part their own. 4. All electrical conductors dissipate heat when carrying current. 5. Ex. 6. Define the function of the Participle II and translate the sentences into Russian.
1. The complexity of the technique involved increased considerably.
2. The rate of a reaction depends on the specific nature of the substances involved. 3. Energy loss has been considered in Chapter II.
4. The information obtained is very valuable. 5. The forces applied are to a maximum tension, decrease to zero, rise to a maximum compression and decrease again to zero. 6.
