Year 1
Students take two intensive, practically-oriented courses in British Sign Language, one course in Introduction to Deaf History and Culture, one course in Introduction to Languages and Intercultural Studies, and two Elective courses.
Year 2
Students again take two intensive, practically-oriented courses in BSL Advanced (which includes language tuition and an introduction to translation and interpreting skills), and one course each in Deaf People in Society and Comparative Studies, General Linguistics, Sign Linguistics and Working with Deaf Communities.
Year 3
Students usually spend this year in two placements, where they work in the signing community with organisations in the field, further developing their language skills and cultural awareness.
As an alternative, in each semester students can opt for a study-abroad placement, to study sign language interpreting or a related subject at one of our partner universities.
Year 4
The honours year includes two courses each in BSL Proficiency, Advanced Interpreting Skills, and Translation & Interpreting Studies and the International Context, one course in Interpreting in the Community and a final placement course, in which students work closely with professional interpreters.

Русский жестовый язык на Факультете английского языка
в МГЛУ
Долгое время жестовые языки находились вне поля зрения лингви­стики и лингводидактики и были полностью исключены из познава­тельного процесса этих наук. В конце ХХ столетия в лингвистике про­исходят кардинальные изменения, определившие новый подход и иную трактовку жестовых языков. Поле традиционного исследования языков значительно расширяется, и жестовые языки, которые изна­чально считались лишь средством общения глухих, начинают иденти­фицироваться в качестве естественных языков, обладающих визу­ально-жестовой модальностью. Это событие вызвало большой интерес к жестовым языкам и обусловило их широкую популярность.

Набор студентов на направление подготовки «Лингвистика», про­филь «Теория и практика перевода жестового языка межкультурной коммуникации» в МГЛУ начался в 2012 году. Так МГЛУ стал одним из первых вузов на территории РФ, открывшим программу подготовки переводчиков русского жестового языка на уровне бакалавриата с присвоением диплома о высшем образовании государственного образца.
Обучением студентов, поступивших на этот профиль, занимаются опытные преподаватели-носители русского жестового языка (РЖЯ), имеющие большой педагогический и переводческий опыт. В процессе обучения студенты не только углубленно и профессионально овладе­вают русским жестовым и английским языками, но и принимают ак­тивное участие в студенческой жизни, выездных мероприятиях и ста­жировках.
Выпускники этого профиля высоко ценятся на рынке труда и имеют широкий спектр карьерных возможностей в силу уникальности их квалификации.
Получив диплом бакалавра, выпускники имеют возможность про­должить обучение в магистратуре по направлению подготовки «Линг­вистика», профили «Лингвистика, лингводидактика и межкультурная коммуникация» и «Межъязыковая и межкультурная коммуникация».
Наряду с другими предметами, студенты, сдавшие РЖЯ в качестве вступительного испытания, получают возможность изучать его в мини-группах. Преподавание РЖЯ на уровне магистратуры в МГЛУ носит уникальный и эксклюзивный характер: преподаватели-носители РЖЯ не только обучают студентов тонкостям своего языка, но и во­влекают их в культуру глухих, погружают в языковую среду, тем са­мым давая обучающимся возможность совершенствовать свои языко­вые навыки в ситуациях реального общения.

Подготовка переводчиков РЖЯ: опыт Новосибирска

Подводя итоги уходящего 2017 года, можно сказать, что в Новоси-
бирске состоялось огромное количество мероприятий.
Например
, первый по счету Молодежный форум глухих, который прошел при активном участии молодежи города Новосибирска. Или участие и призовые места в чемпионате «Абилимпикс». Немало меро­приятий было проведено в рамках форума «Новосибирск. Город без­граничных возможностей», после которого начала работу бесплат­ная Школа русского жестового языка.
И это еще не все.
В конце июня в Новосибирском государственном техническом университете (НГТУ) состоялся долгожданный первый выпуск студентов, получивших высшее образование переводчиков русского жестового языка.

В 2013 году, при поддержке ВОГ в лице вице-президента Стани­слава Александровича Иванова, НГТУ, а точнее факультет гуманитар­ного образования, получил 25 бюджетных мест и набрал первую группу студентов на направление «Лингвистика» по профилю "Пере­водчик английского языка и русского жестового языка". Все студенты впервые столкнулись с такой тематикой, учились, постепенно осваивая и культуру глухих, и сам русский жестовый язык. Преподавателями были переводчики-CODA Лаборатории русского жестового языка Ин­ститута социальных технологий и реабилитации НГТУ (ИСТР НГТУ), которые уже имели большой опыт обучения слышащих людей и на курсах РЖЯ и подготовки переводчиков из числа слабослышащих на уровне среднего профессионального образования.
Сказать, что это
было трудно, – значит ничего не сказать. Было ОЧЕНЬ трудно! Преподаватели искали разные подходы и методы, преимущественно на основе коммуникативной методики, ежедневно старались общаться со студентами только на жестовом языке, без го­лоса, приглашали на занятия глухих, в основном студентов ИСТР НГТУ, поощряли общение между слышащими и глухими студентами и совместное творчество
. Профессиональных преподавателей из числа глухих не было, но мы понимали, что без активного участия глухих, именно взрослых, обучение будущих переводчиков невозможно. И начали привлекать глухих в образовательный процесс. Первыми глу­хими преподавателями стали известные в Новосибирске брат и сестра – Алексей Соколов и Вероника Копосова (Соколова). Глухие из семьи глухих, которые
вместе с нами делали первые шаги по обучению слы­шащих переводчиков на уровне высшего образования. В дальнейшем к нашей команде присоединились глухие Марина Борисова и Руфина Кадыргулова.
К концу 4-летнего обучения из 25 человек осталось 12 человек. Так как у студентов была двойная специализация – английский язык и рус­ский жестовый язык, государственный экзамен
был в виде двух зада­ний: письменный перевод с английского языка на русский язык и уст­ный синхронный перевод с русского языка на русский жестовый язык. Студенты справились.
На сегодняшний день с РЖЯ связаны 7 выпускников: 4 человека работают в службе 112, которая сейчас проходит этап формирования доступности для глухих, 1 человек – в Доме
творчества глухих Ново-
сибирска, 1 человек – в Диспетчерском центре «Сурдофон» и

1 человек работает со слепоглухими. Остальные или продолжили обучение, или занимаются английским языком.
Первый выпуск переводчиков РЖЯ в НГТУ
Обучая слышащих студентов на уровне высшего образования именно с целью подготовки переводчиков РЖЯ, мы пришли к выводу, что в России катастрофическая нехватка преподавателей РЖЯ именно из глухих. По нашей практике, среднестатистический глухой просто так обучать слышащих, к сожалению, не может. Для этого он должен иметь и теоретическую подготовку; и понимание, как
слышащие усва­ивают ЖЯ; и представление, что такое ЖЯ как с точки зрения лингви­стики, так и предмета обучения, методики обучения слышащих с при­менением различных технологий.
Первый выпуск в НГТУ студентов по направлению «Лингвистика», профилю «Переводчик английского языка и русского жестового языка» состоялся, но на этом наша работа не
заканчивается – слышащих студентов, желающих получить профессию переводчика РЖЯ, по-прежнему много: 1 курс – 43 человека; 2 курс – 45 человек; 3 курс – 31 человек; 4 курс – 33 человека. Поэтому вопросов и задач еще очень много.

What is a Sign Language Interpreter?
A sign language interpreter is someone who helps hearing impaired or deaf individuals understand a spoken language by converting it into sign language. Interpreters are needed in both one-on-one situations as well as group settings. This service is needed in a variety of settings, such as the performing arts, schools, hospitals, doctor’s offices, court rooms, law offices and the government.
