There are different prefixes and suffixes in English that, when
added to words, change their meaning or word class. Prefixes go at the
start of a word and change its meaning. Suffixes go at the end of a word
and change its word class. For example:
• the prefix un- gives the word an opposite meaning: fashiona-
ble/unfashionable
• the suffix -able changes a noun to an adjective : fash-
ion/fashionable
In the exam, particularly the reading paper, you will certainly
come across vocabulary that you do not know. Using your knowledge
29

of prefixes and suffixes can be a useful tool in helping you to understand the likely meaning of unknown words.
One of the most common uses of a prefix is to change a word to its
opposite meaning. There are a number of prefix forms used to make a
word negative. These include: in-, un-, im- and non-.
A synonym is a word or phrase with the same meaning. Sometimes the difference is in formality. A paraphrase is when a word or
phrase is ex pressed in a different way. There are many synonyms! In
the test, quest ions often require you to know a number of synonyms or
to recognise a phrase that expresses a similar meaning, e .g. very
good/excellent.
An antonym is a word or phrase with the opposite meaning. Recognising antonyms is useful in the test, particularly when answering
reading and listening questions. Words may have different antonyms,
depending on the context.
very good / very bad
a mature cheese / a mild cheese
a mature person / an immature person
Certain prepositions must be used according to the verbs or nouns
they follow. In the exam, it's important to recognise and use the correct
prepositions. Try to memorise the correct prepositions in combination
with the words they follow.
• verb + preposition: It depends on the weather.
• noun + preposition: He's a friend of mine.
Recognising the grammatical form of words can help you in many
aspects of the test. Using prefixes and suffixes as well as organising words
into families is helpful. When recording new words in your notebook, include the word class (noun, verb, etc.) and any special features
Задания
Exercise 39. Look at the words (1-7). Match the words with
the correct suffix from the box.
-able -al -ion -er -ity -ly -ion -ness

2 sensitive 6 thin
