UNIT 2. ABSTRACT

Grammar). Soil samples were
collected for analysis.
Present Simple
The paper fo-
cuses on mechanical properties of novel alloys;
Concrete structures
are able withstand multiple loads;
This study examines
sustainable construction methods;
The results indi-
cate that RCA concrete exhibits distinct behavior compared to NA
concrete.
Past Simple
Simulation confirmed a 22 % reduction in load-bearing struc-
ture stresses.
Present Perfect
Recent studies have demonstrated
the advantages of green materials.
It was observed that the
new composite materials outperform traditional ones.
Plasma treatment enhances surface
properties, but further testing is needed.

45

words concise informative passive length structured formal
What is an abstract?
An abstract is a (1) __________ summary of the main points of
a research paper or article. It usually consists of a single (2) __________
paragraph, although in some cases it may be (3) __________ into several sections depending on the requirements of the journal or conference.
The main (4) __________ of an abstract is to provide readers
with a quick overview of the content so they can decide whether to
read the entire paper.
An effective abstract includes:
1) a brief (5) __________ that outlines the context and back-
ground of the study;
2) a statement of the (6) __________ or objectives of the re-
search;
3) a summary of the (7) __________ or approach taken during
the study;
4) a concise description of the key (8) __________ or findings;
5) a clear (9) __________ that explains the significance or im-
plications of the results;
6) a list of (10) __________ that help categorize the work.
Good abstracts use a (11) __________ style with frequent use
of the (12) __________ voice and avoid unnecessary details. The
(13) __________ should comply with the guidelines provided by
publishers, usually between 150 and 250 words.

With the Earth’s climate systems and life-sustaining biosphere
unravelling under climate breakdown, the present and future of
worldviews of modernity, progress, and development for organised

50
human life are in suspension. These crises effectively negate possible
futures for human and non-human relatives in the planetary ecosystems with accelerating degradation and alienation. This article ad-
dresses this inclination to ‘defuture’ by exploring how design prac-
tises could reclaim themselves from capitalist modernity and the unprecedented magnitude and urgency of the climate crisis by using
speculative design fictions – to ‘refuture’ and rehumanise what is defutured and dehumanised, such that the future can be profoundly different when it arrives. I will discuss with a first-of-its-kind fictional
research journal, The Open Journal of ReFuturing 2131 AD, generated in my Research through/by Design (Rt/bD) doctoral research.
This breakthrough genre of design fiction is written as an Indigenous
critique from a future where the fictional journal and its nine designed
artefacts speculate on the first century of climate reparations. This
contribution highlights the constraints, concerns, values, possibilities, and limitations of using design fiction to structure new
knowledge and could-be worlds that enhance the effectiveness and
relevance of design research within an Rt/bD framework for just and
resilient climate futures.
Exercise 8.1. Answer the questions.
1. Which sentence (if any) specify the purpose and the objec-
tives of the work? What tenses does the author use?

methodology used?
4. Which sentences (if any) present the findings or results of
the research?

pact of the research?
